Amy Adams as Princess Giselle using magic in Disenchanted - Agents of Fandom

‘Disenchanted’ Press Conference: Amy Adams Enchanted to Return

Disenchanted is now streaming on Disney+, so the cast and creators including Amy Adams, Patrick Dempsey, Adam Shankman and more joined the Agents of Fandom at the Disney Global Press Conference.

Enchanted is one of Disney’s top live-action films that has lived happily ever after in the hearts of many since its release in 2007. Thankfully, Amy Adams, Patrick Dempsey, and company are back. Disenchanted, which is now streaming on Disney+ is a worthy sequel.

While Enchanted already had a star-studded cast, the sequel took a level-up. The entire crew from the original returns. Meanwhile, newcomer Maya Rudolph stars as the primary antagonist alongside Yvette Nicole Brown and Jayma Mays. An older Morgan Philip calls for a new actress, and Gabriella Baldacchino steals the show. All of these friendly faces appeared at the Disenchanted press conference. Additionally, creators Adam Shankman and Barry Josephson joined the press conference, along with composer Alen Menken.

The Spark of a Sequel

There was one thing Producer Barry Josephson and director Adam Shankman agreed upon wholeheartedly. The amazing Amy Adams was crucial in creating the sequel. Not only from an acting standpoint, but her will to return as Gisele was the driving force. Adams also returned as an Executive Producer on the film, helping to create an enchanting sequel.

It just was such a joy. Amy really was our sorta
starting point of wanting to play Giselle again. And
actually, when Adam joined our development process, it was just, you know, took us, you know, into the stratosphere because he brought with him Richard LaGravenese who developed the script and really went to another level.”

Sarcastic heading aside, it was wonderful to see Disenchanted clean up two errors made by the original. Primarily, Idina Menzel is one of the world’s premiere vocal artists. To have her cast in Enchanted and NOT SING? Preposterous. To make matters worse, she revealed at the press conference that she even recorded a song for the original that hit the cutting room floor. Thankfully, this was addressed prior to filming the sequel. Amy Adams and Adam Shankman were to the rescue, demanding Idina have a song in the sequel on day one.

The pleasantly surprising addition was the voice of Patrick Dempsey. While 2007’s film saw him as a serious, down-to-Earth character, the new straight to streamer on Disney+ made serious changes. Dempsey outlined how singing in a film for the first time was challenging, but also incredibly rewarding.

It was a joy. And that whole process of going through, finding your voice, working with the coach on that, learning the lyrics and the dance was an extraordinary experience and something I’d never done before. And really appreciate the talent with the voices and the singing of Idina and Amy and Maya and everyone. You know, it’s an extraordinary feeling you get when you sing. The vibration, it’s something very intoxicating about it. So it’s nice to get a taste of that.

– Patrick Dempsey (Robert)

The intoxicating music comes in full force in the sequel, with composer Alan Menken playing a huge role. The theme throughout the press conference was camaraderie. The entire group was so thankful for Amy Adams, while newcomers led by Maya Rudolph were ecstatic to be a part of the franchise. With the combined ingredients of an all-star returning cast and crew, Amy Adams‘ enthusiasm, a magnificent group of new additions, and an obvious but perfectly fitting plot from Director Adam Shankman, Disenchanted is a sequel that satisfies.
