DC Reveals First Look At Wonder Woman’s Wonder War Finale (And It Closes Out An Epic Run)

In 2023, Wonder Woman entered a bold new era under a powerhouse creative team. Tom King, Daniel Sampere, Tomeu Morey, and Clayton Cowles introduced fans to characters like Trinity, The Sovereign, and most recently The Matriarch, and it’s all been building toward an epic closing chapter in Wonder Woman #40. Now DC has revealed a first look and new details about the upcoming Wonder War finale, which will also close out one of the most talked-about Wonder Woman runs in years.

DC has revealed the first look at Wonder Woman #40, which is set to hit comic stores on December 16th and will close out the long-running Wonder War storyline. True to the story’s scope and scale, the finale will feature an epic battle pitting the forces of the Sovereign, the Matriarch, and a host of powerful villains against Wonder Woman and her family as they attempt to defend Themyscira. This modern era of Wonder Woman has showcased Diana’s resilience, power, compassion, love, and fearlessness at every turn. While Diana is at the center of this story, several new characters have also been thrown into the mix. One of the biggest new additions is Trinity, the daughter of Diana and Steve, who has followed in her mother’s heroic footsteps. Watching Trinity grow up alongside DC’s other young heroes created some of the most unexpected and delightful adventures along the way, and now she’s about to fight alongside her mother in the upcoming final battle.

The series also added two brand new villains to the Wonder Woman arsenal, including the Sovereign. The Sovereign has controlled the country from the shadows for decades, but he finally met his match in Wonder Woman, who pushed him beyond his lofty heights and not only unseated him from power but also took all his money. The Sovereign wasn’t done, though, as his daughter, The Matriarch, entered the fray, and she might be an even bigger threat than her dad ever was.

Diana’s fight against the Sovereign and the trauma and trials she had to endure to finally defeat him certainly drew its share of criticisms, and coupled with certain arcs in the story getting away from what the book did so well early on in the series, this particular run has become a bit divisive. What is unquestionable is that this Wonder Woman run has been fearless in taking big swings, and while some of those might not have worked out perfectly, many of those swings connected, and it’s now led to an anticipated finale that will hopefully pay off an epic story while also setting the stage for what’s next.
