’Disney Lorcana: Illumineer’s Quest – The Great Hunny Rescue’ Review – A Winnie the Pooh Adventure Fans Have Been Waiting For

Disney Lorcana’s Attack of the Vine brought several fan favorites together for one of the best Lorcana sets of the year, and that roster included the lively inhabitants of the Hundred Acre Wood. Now, just in time for Halloween, Winnie the Pooh, Piglet, Tigger, and the rest of the crew have set out to take down the Vine for good in the new Disney Lorcana: Illumineer’s Quest – The Great Hunny Rescue, and Disney fans are in for a delightful, challenging adventure.

If you’re not familiar with an Illumineer’s Quest, it’s a standalone adventure that allows you to play Disney Lorcana cooperatively against a central enemy. In this case, you and up to three other players battle the Vine and its army of Vinelings, which also include evil Vine versions of classic characters. Each player uses their own deck and uses their cards in a fresh new way since their actions can now set up or play off cards from other players.

‘The Great Hunny Rescue’ Gives Even ‘Disney Lorcana’ Veterans A Challenge

If you’ve played the previous Illmunineer’s Quest, the core elements remain the same. Each time the Vine draws a card, you check whether the inkwell has that much ink. If there’s not, you add that card to the Inkwell. If there’s enough ink, you play the card and continue the turn. As you progress through the game, the Vine will throw more enemies at you, and some of its cards will also bring multiple Vine Tendrils into play that you have to work together to overcome.

While the Vines are easy to defeat, you can find yourself in a scenario where you get hit with three or four Vine Tendrils in a single turn. If you also have a few other enemies to deal with, this can cause chaos. That is why teamwork is incredibly crucial: if you aren’t working together, you could easily find yourself overwhelmed before you even reach the final boss.

To take down the Vine and its forces, the Illumineer’s Quest includes two 60-card decks. One is themed after Winnie the Pooh and his friends, while the other features The Incredibles, though like any Lorcana deck, it also includes characters from other franchises.

Thanks to the new Hunny keyword, you can build out a full group of Winnie the Pooh characters to embrace the theme of the adventure, and while Lorcana’s card designs are always stellar, the Winnie the Pooh cards are simply on another level. It feels as if Winnie the Pooh and his friends stepped out of a Dungeons & Dragons adventure. The group includes amazing renditions of Kanga (Hunny Bard), Tigger (Hunny Barbarian), Rabbit (Hunny Paladin), Lumpy (Hunny Druid), Christopher Robin (Hunny Sage), Gopher (Hunny Cook), Roo (Hunny Rogue), Piglet (Hunny Mage Apprentice), Eeyore (Hunny Scholar), Owl (Hunny Ranger), and Winnie the Pooh as the Hunny Archmage.

Cards like ‘With A Few Good Friends’ are the cherry on the sundae, and if Ravensburger doesn’t make a poster of this at some point, I will simply have to pen a strongly worded letter. That said, the set includes wonderful cards throughout, including the villains’ side, and the artwork shines on every level.

Part of the game’s charm is that it comes with everything you need for a two-player experience. You get the board, tokens and components, a Vine deck, two hero decks, and deck boxes for each. Plus, you get foil versions of Christopher Robin, Sven, Mr. Incredible, and Violet, plus two Prize Packs you can open once you defeat each encounter. For $59.99, that’s an impressive haul, and while it supports only solo and two-player co-op out of the box, it’s compatible with all Lorcana decks, so you can easily get that up to four players without much work or cost.

‘Disney Lorcana’ Provides a New Way to Play

Disney Lorcana: Illumineer’s Quest – The Great Hunny Rescue is a great game to engage with new players, as through the game you are helping them to learn more about what their cards can do. Even when they start playing competitively, that knowledge will easily carry over, and it also provides a guide regarding which cards they want to add to their deck or how they want to build their decks overall moving forward. Now, Hunny Rescue is a bit on the difficult side, but you’ll find yourself wanting to give it “just one more try’ even when you fall short of the goal.

While I love competitive Disney Lorcana, the cooperative gameplay of the Illumineer’s Quest is one of my favorite ways to experience the game. The Great Hunny Rescue then took that experience and ran with it, and if you are as big of a Winnie the Pooh fan as I am, this is the epic Hundred Acre Wood adventure you’ve been waiting for.
