‘Invincible’ Creators Believe the Series Came at the Perfect Time

Is this the golden age of superhero content?

Invincible was immediately acclaimed as one of the best comic book adaptations ever when it first hit screens. Based on Robert Kirkman‘s Invincible comics, creators Kirkman and Simon Racioppa teamed up to bring Kirkman’s story from the pages to the screen.

It’s rare to see a legendary piece of art improved upon when adapted. However, that’s exactly what Kirkman and showrunner Racioppa accomplished with Season 1. The two Invincible creators were at New York Comic Con this year where they explained how the timing of the series couldn’t be better.

At a roundtable including Agents of Fandom Editor-in-Chief TJ Zwarych, creator Robert Kirkman and showrunner Simon Racioppa shared their excitement for Season 2. When asked about how they’ve been so successful on the adult side of comic book content, the Invincible creators shared they think the series is happening at the best possible time.

“20 years ago, it was just Corey Walker, Ryan Atley and myself. We were commenting on and expanding upon the tropes of superhero storytelling. It played well because comic book readers were well educated on years of comic book history. Now, the Invincible show gets to comment on some of the structures that are popular in the MCU and in DC.”

Kirkman went on to add that while they aren’t “spoofing” anyone else’s content, it bodes well for their story that the general public is familiar with the traditional superhero story. That way, Kirkman and Racioppa are able to flip the plot on its head to shock viewers with their unique twists.

Some critics claim “superhero fatigue” is an issue these days. However, Invincible proves all it takes is a fresh new take on the story. The second season picked up immediately where the first left off and didn’t disappoint. The shocking nature of Part 1 was on par with its predecessor, arguably better. While audiences crave something new, the Invincible creators are satisfying that desire.
