After a brief but very enjoyable first season, Chad Powers Season 2 returns to Disney+ and Hulu with a much more suspenseful installment. Glen Powell continues to be as charismatic and fun as ever as the titular character, while Perry Mattfeld‘s Coach Ricky takes on an even larger role in Season 2, and the series benefits from it.
Whether it’s the fear of Chad’s secret being discovered, the will they, won’t they dynamic between Chad, AKA Russ Holliday and Ricky, or the Catfish’s playoff chances, Chad Powers Season 2 will keep viewers on the edge of their seats, hoping for a positive outcome. However, with only six episodes, the story works more as a part two of the first season, as opposed to its own complete arc.
‘Chad Powers’ Season 2 Dials Back the Comedy and Ups the Suspense
While there are still plenty of jokes, Season 2 shifts from light-hearted and whimsical to a much more suspenseful tone. The backup quarterback of the Catfish, Gerry (Colton Ryan), grows more and more disgruntled with his role on the team, which spells bad news for Chad and his friends. As Gerry’s psyche grows darker, so does the show’s tone.
At times, the series embraces horror-style tropes and camera work. Although multiple character dynamics and frequent jokes keep this series as a comedy, the suspenseful turn in Season 2 raises the intensity to match the stakes of the Catfish’s season on the field.
Glenn Powell Is As Charismatic as Ever
Even with the darker turn in Chad Powers Season 2, Glenn Powell’s charisma and excellence as both Russ Holliday and Chad Powers keep the series light and fun. His comedic timing is top-tier, fully bringing the character from the original Eli Manning skit to life.
However, while Powell is delightful comedically, it’s his emotional character arc in Season 2 that is most impressive. Powell wonderfully walks the tightrope as his character struggles to become a better person. Although turning into Chad Powers has helped Russ Holliday become a better person, that same disguise could be the downfall of everyone close to him. As his character struggles to balance his desire to play football and be loved by the masses with doing what is right, Powell perfectly depicts the emotional rollercoaster on both sides of the scale.
Perry Mattfeld Shines as the Co-Lead of ‘Chad Powers’ Season 2
As exciting as the South Georgia Catfish’s journey is with Chad Powers at the helm, the season’s true heart and tension come from the dynamic between Russ Holliday and Ricky. Perry Mattfeld takes on a bigger role as Coach Ricky’s arc expands in Chad Powers Season 2, and every time she’s on screen, she elevates the scene.
Mattfeld and Powell’s chemistry is so strong that, even with the enhanced stakes in Season 2, whether they end up together remains the most suspenseful aspect. The circumstances couldn’t be worse with infinite roadblocks between them, but throughout the season, both the characters and actors consistently bring out the best in each other whenever they’re on screen together.
Will There Be a ‘Chad Powers’ Season 3?
While the series has yet to be renewed for another season, the story in Chad Powers Season 2 certainly leaves potential for a Season 3. Hopefully, if it does happen, the series expands beyond six-episode seasons, as both installments so far have felt like two halves of a story that together make a full season.
However, with great on-screen chemistry between the cast, a star like Glen Powell, and some great emotional storytelling in Season 2, it certainly wouldn’t be a surprise if a third season is on the horizon for Chad Powers.
