Warning: Spoilers ahead for Only Murders in the Building Season 4, Episode 3, “Two for the Road.”
The mystery of Sazz Pataki’s (Jane Lynch) murder continues to heat up. As Mabel (Selena Gomez), Charles (Steve Martin), and Oliver (Martin Short) successfully break into the final unchecked apartment in the West Tower of The Arconia, an abundance of clues are unraveled in Only Murders in the Building Season 4. However, before they can dive too deeply into their investigation, the FBI intervenes in the case.
Zach Galifianakis, Eugene Levy, and Eva Longoria take center stage throughout the episode, which, in theory, sounds great. Unfortunately, the attention is taken off of the leading trio to tell the story of the guest stars, making it one of the weaker installments of the series. Luckily, a mediocre episode of Only Murders in the Building is still a very enjoyable half-hour of television. Check out all the details from our Only Murders in the Building Season 4, Episode 3 recap below!
“Two for the Road” Features Guest Stars Joining the Investigation
Although the crew finally has found the code to get into the apartment belonging to a man named Dudenoff, they are immediately thwarted by the FBI, which takes over the investigation from the NYPD. Luckily, they can explore long enough to discover that it’s the likely location for the shot to have been taken. Additionally, they discover a ham radio, the same thing they saw in both the neighbors’ apartments and Sazz Pataki’s home.
Unfortunately, while the FBI suspects the recently escaped Jan (Amy Ryan) is involved in the murder and the mystery continues to gain momentum, the story takes a hard turn, deciding to focus on the guest stars in Only Murders in the Building Season 4, Episode 3. The actors decide it’s time to get to know the people on whom their roles are based and pair off for individual side quests with their respective trio members.
Eugene Levy Is Charles’ Biggest Fan in ‘Only Murders in the Building’ Season 4
While Oliver and Zach struggle with the tensions of clashing personalities, Eugene Levy and Charles quickly become the best of friends. Since Eugene voiced the French version of Charles’ character Brazzos on Canadian television, the two shared a connection before they had ever even met. Unfortunately, it’s a totally different story for Oliver and Zach Galifianakis in Only Murders in the Building Season 4, Episode 3.
Despite acting like he is getting along with Oliver for a short period of time, it’s clear Galifianakis truly despises Oliver Putnam. Thankfully, Howard (Michael Cyril Creighton) arrives to save the day, convincing the actor to view Oliver as an artistic challenge and to embrace how complex and pathetic Oliver is as a person.
The longer Zach Galifianakis and Eugene Levy spend with Oliver and Charles, the closer both pairs become alike. Zach slowly grows to accept the responsibility of playing Oliver while embracing how pathetic he is, while Eugene slowly begins to think less of Charles with each passing minute. Both scenes bouncing back and forth make for enjoyable segments, but they undeniably take away from the overarching story in Only Murders in the Building Season 4, Episode 3.
Eva Longoria Takes Charge in ‘OMITB’ Season 4
Thankfully, as Charles, Oliver, Zach, and Eugene all are messing around getting to know each other, Eva Longoria plays her cards differently when she spends time with Mabel. She prefers to create her own version of Mabel as opposed to mimicking how she is in real life and decides the two of them should dive head first into solving the murder. Longoria immediately takes off for the West Tower, where she and Mabel question the last of the remaining neighbors, a Christmas influencer named Rudy (Kumail Nanjiani).
Unfortunately, the only secret their inquisitions unveil is that Rudy, a Christmas influencer for social media, actually hates the holiday. Although their efforts were unsuccessful, Mabel is inspired by Eva Longoria’s bold nature in Only Murders in the Building Season 4, Episode 3. Still searching for a permanent residence, Mabel begins researching New York City squatting laws, deciding to attempt to make the Dudenoff apartment her new home.
‘Only Murders in the Building’ Season 4, Episode 3 Review: A Fun Joyride Without a Destination
While the first two episodes of Only Murders in the Building Season 4 heavily advance the plot, the third installment takes a step back and focuses on character development. It’s enjoyable, with great comedic performances, but those hoping for additional suspects or more time spent with the investigation may be disappointed. However, despite the flaws, Only Murders in the Building Season 4, Episode 3 still delivers a fun, low-stakes television episode.
