‘Only Murders in the Building’ Season 4, Episode 4 Recap & Review: A Familiar Face Returns

Life catches up with Charles, Mabel, and Oliver as the investigation takes a back seat.

Warning: Spoilers ahead for Only Murders in the Building Season 4, Episode 4, “The Stunt Man.”

As the trio struggles to solve the murder of Sazz Pataki (Jane Lynch), nightmares of her death continue to plague Charles (Steve Martin) in Only Murders in the Building Season 4. Although the investigation got off to a hot start, the entire group now finds themselves in the gutter. Mabel (Selena Gomez) is navigating how to solve a murder while maintaining her squatter rights in the Dudenoff apartment, while Oliver (Martin Short) is reeling over his poor decision-making in his relationship with Loretta (Meryl Streep).

Despite Mabel, Oliver, and Charles being at a low point, the episode receives a shot of adrenaline from exciting guest stars in typical OMITB fashion. Check out all the details from our Only Murders in the Building Season 4, Episode 4 recap below!

The Investigation Runs Dry in “The Stunt Man”

Despite none of them being in the proper mindset to investigate, Charles, Oliver, and Mabel follow the only lead they have left and check out Sazz’s favorite pub, a bar for stuntmen. Since Mabel is still trying to secure her new residence in The Arconia, Howard (Michael Cyril Creighton) remains in the building to ensure her squatter rights with the help of his new pet pig in Only Murders in the Building Season 4, Episode 4.

The minute they walk in, they are immediately treated with judging glares as Charles is recognized as Sazz’s former acting double. Luckily, they are approached by a surprisingly familiar face, as Paul Rudd returns as Ben Glenroy’s former stunt double, Glen Stubbins.

Although Stubbins had plenty of work lined up when Ben was alive, his death in Oliver’s play from Only Murders in the Building Season 3 has left him penniless. He offers his help in their investigation in exchange for a job, so they agree to help him land a role in the movie about their life.

He introduces them to Sazz’s former chiropractor, who reveals details vital to their investigation. In addition to telling the trio that Sazz was planning to change careers due to being in a “one-sided relationship,” she provides Charles with a chiropractic adjustment that makes him hallucinate and see Sazz once again. While the trio speculates that the one-sided relationship is likely referring to her romantic relationship with Jan (Amy Ryan), it could also be with the actor she doubled for after Charles.

Only Murders in the Building Season 4, Episode 4, “The Stunt Man,” continues the trend from the previous episode, focusing more on character growth than on solving the murder. Oliver finally acknowledges his feelings for Loretta, admitting he almost proposed to her earlier in the season but chickened out.

Meanwhile, Mabel is forced to confront the residents of the West Tower of The Arconia after Howard flakes from his responsibilities, and they take over the apartment where Mabel is squatting. She discovers they have been so fishy over Professor Dudenoff because he owns all of their apartments. They are all part of a rent control scheme, thus temporarily eliminating them as suspects. Mabel convinces them to let her into their plans and secures herself a cheap new residence.

As Mabel and Oliver deal with their personal issues, Charles makes minor progress in the case. He remembers Sazz talking about wanting to start her own stunt academy, which was likely the career change she was referring to before her death. He gathers Mabel and Oliver and the trio reunites to investigate a property owned by Sazz, potentially the location for her intended business.

When they arrive, they discover the producer of their movie, Bev Melon (Molly Shannon), rifling through Sazz’s belongings. Bev points a gun at them, and Only Murders in the Building Season 4, Episode 4 ends on a mysterious cliffhanger. Although the latest installment feels chaotic with its pace and storytelling, it also sets up the rest of the season for a rollercoaster of excitement.
