‘Cobra Kai’ Season 6, Episode 7 Recap & Review: Miyagi-Do Lack Their Edge

Daniel LaRusso goes barking up the wrong tree for answers about Mr. Miyagi.

Warning: Spoilers ahead for Cobra Kai Season 6, Episode 7 “Dog in the Fight.”

After a harsh (literal) slap in the face, Team Miyagi-Do realizes just how tough their opponents are as the Sekai Taikai continues in Cobra Kai Season 6, Episode 7. The Season 6, Part 2 premiere showed how the students dealt with Tory Nichols (Peyton List) rejoining Cobra Kai under John Kreese (Martin Kove) and Kim Da-Eun (Alicia Hannah-Kim). With the kids and sensei having an internal battle, they’re losing focus when it comes to fighting their true competitors.

If Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) didn’t have enough to worry about, someone from Mr. Miyagi’s (Pat Morita) past might be able to give him the answers he’s looking for. After the previous episode gave a sprinkle of the other fighters’ strengths and teased the brutality of the Sekai Taikai in the past, Cobra Kai Season 6, Episode 7 “Dog in the Fight” showcases just how tough and ruthless this international karate tournament is. Follow along with our recap for all the details.

The episode begins with the Iron Dragons and Cobra Kai teams racking up points in the Sekai Taikai as they easily defeat their foes. With Daniel and Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) shouting opposing advice to the Miyagi-Do students, the team, except Miguel Diaz (Xolo Maridueña), is struggling to stand a chance in the challenges. Daniel gives words of encouragement to uplift the kids, but Johnny thinks they need tough love. Chozen (Yuji Okumoto) is still drinking away his heartbreak and can’t offer any support.

While Daniel and Johnny are arguing in the hotel lobby about how to mentor their students, a receptionist gives Daniel a letter that says Master Serrano can meet with him to answer his questions about the Sekai Taikai during Mr. Miyagi’s time. Daniel rushes out to see him, while Johnny reminds him that he needs to be back before the rest of the Sekai Taikai events later that day.

As Daniel updates Amanda LaRusso (Courtney Henggeler) about Master Serrano, she worries that Daniel is becoming too obsessed with digging up the past. Remembering what Mr. Miyagi said in The Karate Kid about his departed wife and newborn child, Daniel thinks Serrano can shed light on this part of Mr. Miyagi’s life that he never discussed.

As Devon Lee (Oona O’Brien) and Sam LaRusso (Mary Mouser) debrief on their failures in the matches, Iron Dragons co-captain, Zara Malik (Rayna Vallandingham) joins their elevator and livestreams to her thousands of followers about the powerful women in the Sekai Taikai. But she disregards Sam and Devon since they didn’t win their events.

Meanwhile, Demetri Alexopoulos (Gianni Decenzo) contemplates quitting the Sekai Taikai because of the team’s overall performance. Eli “Hawk” Moskowitz (Jacob Bertrand) tells Miguel that most of the team thinks that he should be their captain instead of Robby Keene (Tanner Buchanan).

After their little spat in the previous episode, Johnny has another run-in with Iron Dragon Sensei Wolf (Lewis Tan), who says that he makes sure his students eat healthy to be at their peak body type. He calls Americans like Johnny privileged because they have no idea what it means to make sacrifices to achieve their goals. Wolf isn’t worried about Miyagi-Do since he believes they’ll be eliminated during the upcoming event. Moments later, Sam walks by and sees Wolf aggressively hitting Axel Kovacevic (Patrick Luwis) during training. Axel notices that Sam saw what happened, but she runs off.

The next Sekai Taikai challenge has the fighters battling each other on a narrow platform, trying to knock the other off. Devon and Robby are knocked away in under a minute, but Miguel manages to kick his opponent off. Even though Miguel tries to celebrate with Johnny, Johnny is too focused on Miyagi-Do’s overall ranking as they’re close to elimination. As Johnny tries to give the students a motivational speech, they all end up arguing with each other and walk out.

Robby asks Miguel to be upfront with him about how he’s feeling. Miguel is upset that Robby is failing to be a good captain for Miyagi-Do and claims that he should’ve gotten the title because he’s a better fighter and it would’ve helped him with college applications. While Robby tries to say he deserves it more, Miguel tells him to get his act together or give him the captain spot.

After doubting her spot on the team, Devon confesses to Johnny that she was the one who gave Kenny laxatives in Cobra Kai Season 6, Episode 4 to get a spot on the Sekai Taikai team. Johnny apologizes for pushing her too hard and validates her as a strong fighter. Reflecting on his actions, Johnny leaves Daniel a voicemail taking back the negative things he said about Mr. Miyagi and his legacy, and admits that he needs Daniel just as much as the students do.

Cutting to Daniel, when he arrives at the place Serrano told him to meet, a young kid sells him a Jesus pendant and runs off. Not long after, he gets hit from behind and wakes up locked in a dog cage. Two guys show up to check on him and imply that it was all a trap to keep Daniel away from the Sekai Taikai.

Thanks to the pendant he bought, Daniel uses it to escape from the cage and knocks out his captors. Just as he’s about to escape, a long-haired man fights him. During their scuffle, Daniel rips off one of the man’s sleeves, revealing that he’s Cobra Kai, which causes Daniel to think Kreese organized this. In a full-circle moment, Daniel uses the lessons Mr. Miyagi taught him in The Karate Kid to defeat the long-haired man.

Does Miyagi-Do Get Eliminated in the Sekai Taikai?

The final Sekai Taikai event before the elimination is another platform match. This time, two fighters from each team will battle on an elevated platform where they have to knock each other off. If a fighter falls off, another team member takes their place until an entire team is out. Yoon Do-Jin (Daniel Kim) and Tory secure Cobra Kai as the third-highest dojo in the rankings, as the crowd chants Tory’s name (to the dismay of Zara).

As Miyagi-Do prepares to face off against Dublin Thunder, Johnny reminds them to channel Miyagi-Do in their fighting style. Robby and Sam are first up, but Robby once again gets eliminated easily. Devon puts up a good fight and sacrifices herself to protect Hawk. When Demetri joins Hawk on the platform, he accidentally knocks Hawk off with a Dublin Thunder member. With Miguel left, he manages to defeat the last two Dublin Thunder fighters on his own.

When Daniel returns to the hotel, Kreese taunts him for being away from his team when they need him. Daniel pins Kreese against a wall to show he means business, but Sam arrives and Daniel rushes to hug her. He’s happy to hear Miyagi-Do advanced to the next round, but Johnny and Miguel are packing up to fly back home because Rosa Diaz (Rose Bianco) called to say that Carmen Diaz (Vanessa Rubio) is in the hospital due to a pregnancy complication. Although Daniel promises Johnny that he’ll take care of the team, the final moment of Cobra Kai Season 6, Episode 7 sees Daniel shocked at what’s he going to do without a sensei and a fighter.

‘Cobra Kai’ Season 6, Episode 7 Kicks Up the Action

While the Cobra Kai Season 6, Part 2 premiere didn’t feature much fighting, “Dog in the Fight” turns it up a notch and really shows off the Sekai Taikai spectacle. Even with Cobra Kai taking more of a backseat this episode, the Iron Dragons captains, Zara and Axel, are shaping up to be a formidable threat in the competition. With Miyagi-Do’s best fighter, Miguel, leaving the team to take care of his mom, the dojo is going to need to get their act together or find some serious firepower to fill in his shoes.

As for the mystery surrounding Mr. Miyagi, it’s getting slightly annoying how little progression there is. What’s being teased isn’t enough to draw a big investment into this storyline, but hopefully, the revelation is worth the wait.
