Taylor Swift is officially bringing the Eras Tour to the big screen! Starting October 13, the record-breaking stadium tour will hit theaters all across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The Eras Tour movie is set to provide fans the same electrifying experience in theaters everywhere.
The announcement confirms the countless rumors of a possible concert film, following the sighting of a film crew during the first three nights at Swift’s six-night stop in Los Angeles’ SoFi Stadium this past August. Taylor Swift’s decision to release the film theatrically as opposed to streaming is a testament to the commitment of her enormous fan base, as the movie is likely to be a massive box office success.
As seen through Barbie‘s financial domination this summer, The Eras Tour movie is projected to perform similarly, despite only releasing in North America. An international release date for the movie has yet to be announced, but Swifties across the globe eagerly await the announcement.
Is The Eras Tour movie affected by the SAG-AFTRA strike?
Due to the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strike, many actors and writers are unable to produce or promote any work, as they aren’t being paid fairly by big budget studios. What does this mean for Swift’s concert film, and how is she able to promote it during the current strikes?
According to Billboard, The Eras Tour movie was approved by SAG-AFTRA to be produced under an interim agreement. Taylor Swift obtained clearance under this agreement before shooting the film, along with her name being under a list of approved interim agreements to shoot such projects. Swift is also notorious for paying her crew members generously while on The Eras Tour. It’s possible this gesture is one of the reasons she gained clearances for the film, or it could simply be her immense sway in the entertainment industry.
Swift has also collaborated with Netflix and Disney+ for Reputation Stadium Tour and Folklore: The Long Pond Studio Sessions. Since The Eras Tour is currently only a theatrical release, it’s unknown if the concert film will hit streaming and which platform it will be on. If it is to hit streaming, Swift will evidently make the final decision as to where, and the film is available to potentially stream in early 2024, if she wishes.
What to expect in The Eras Tour movie
Sam Wrench, best known for his work on Brandi Carlile’s IMAX concert presentation In The Canyon Haze Live, along with Billie Eilish Live at the O2, is set to direct The Eras Tour movie. Taylor Swift stars alongside her talented dancers and musical band.
The Eras Tour is listed with a runtime of 2:45, which is shorter than the three-hour live concert. However, this is to be expected with the substantial amount of costumes and set changes that occur which are expected to be cut for the movie.
Variety has stated that the surprise songs Taylor Swift performed during her Los Angeles concerts will be included in the film. Those surprise songs include, “Maroon,” “I Can See You,” “You Are In Love,” “Our Song,” “Death By A Thousand Cuts,” and “You’re On Your Own, Kid.”
