If you’ve kept up with any of the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 marketing, then you’ve seen that a certain type of creature, called an Abelisk, is set to make its return.
Let’s flash back to the opening of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 where we’re introduced to our lovable Baby Groot (Vin Diesel) as he dances to Electric Light Orchestra’s “Mr. Blue Sky.” This scene features our quirky team of outlaws fighting off a huge creature with giant tentacles and teeth. Now, just what exactly is this being?
What is an Abelisk?
An Abelisk is an interdimensional beast created by James Gunn for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2. It’s an original creature to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The Guardians are hired by a race of people called The Sovereign to protect their planet’s source of power, Anulax Batteries, from a rampaging Abelisk. The Abelisk is said to consume the batteries, presumably to increase its own power.
Abelisks have a large amount of sharp teeth, and multiple tentacles that are incredibly strong on their own, as we see them lift, push, throw, and crush the Guardians. Rocket Raccoon (on set: Sean Gunn, voice: Bradley Cooper), Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), and Gamora (Zoe Saldana) use different blasters, while Drax (Dave Bautista) uses his knives against it, but the creature’s body is shown to be too thick to penetrate. This leads Drax to jump in through its mouth, thinking its insides are easier to cut through (which could not be further from the truth).
Powers of the Abelisk explained
When the Abelisk is first seen in Guardians Vol. 2, dark clouds come together creating a rift from which the Abelisk emerges, emanating with rainbow-colored beams. The Abelisk shoots rainbow beams of energy from its mouth, proving to be a serious threat against the Guardians.
While these blasts are colorful, they resemble fire when setting the battlefield aflame. Along with its impenetrable skin, it appears the creature has a large amount of stamina, as it doesn’t show any sign of exhaustion while fighting the Guardians. It is only through a pre-existing cut on its neck that Gamora is able to defeat the being.
Is there an Abelisk in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3?
In the first trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Mantis (Pom Klementieff), Nebula (Karen Gillan), and Drax are shown to come across an Abelisk.
Have The Sovereign decided to work with their former enemy to defeat the Guardians? The team were lucky to defeat the being during their first encounter because of a previous injury. Assuming that this new Abelisk is in perfect condition, how can the Guardians beat this creature?
