‘Jujutsu Kaisen’ Season 3 Part 1 Review: The Culling Game Raises the Stakes

Let the game begin!

Has everything been leading to this? The Culling Game has arrived and takes Jujutsu Kaisen Season 3 Part 1 to new heights. The first installment of the new season delivers stunning animation, strong character moments, and unmatched stakes. Season 3 Part 1 lays the foundation for what’s coming next while also recapping key story events. With major players and new faces, Part 1 is full of exciting dynamics, memorable moments, and incredible fights. The game has officially begun!

Jujutsu Kaisen Season 3 Part 1 is a visual masterpiece. MAPPA’s animation is some of the best in anime, and this stretch of episodes proves it. Episodes like “Perfect Preparation,” which references Quentin Tarantino‘s Kill Bill, and “Tokyo No. 1 Colony, Part 3,” highlight the series’ cinematic quality. The opening sequence features art references such as The Scream by Edward Munch and Ophelia by John Everett Millais. The extra scenes from the manga enhance the story without altering its core, making the Culling Game feel broader and more intense.

It’s rare for two students of the same mentor to fight, but that happens when Yuta, voiced by Megumi Ogata in the Japanese sub and Kayleigh McKee in the English dub, hunts Yuji voiced by Junya Enoki in the Japanese sub and Adam McArthur in the English dub. This first major battle sets the standard for all fights in Jujutsu Kaisen Season Part 1. The fight highlights the characters’ differing experiences while bringing the ensemble cast together. The fight develops characters and story while exploring themes of upperclassmen challenging younger students. Yuta’s return from Jujutsu Kaisen 0 introduces him perfectly into the Culling Game.

The Culling Game is a free-for-all battle between past and present jujutsu sorcerers. Spread across ten colonies, players can enter or skip a colony. Once they join, they cannot leave until the game ends. The game ends only when all participants are eliminated. Kenjaku oversees the Culling Game, voiced by Takahiro Sakurai in the Japanese sub and Lex Lang in the English dub. The game follows a series of strict rules that those participating must find ways to exploit. These rules provide fairness while creating tension, making every single decision have serious consequences.

Exciting New Jujutsu Sorcerers Are Introduced in the Culling Game

Jujutsu Kaisen Season 3 Part 1 introduces several new jujutsu sorcerers. Naoya Zenin, voiced by Kōji Yusa in the Japanese sub and Alan Lee in the English dub, plays a major role, while allies like Kinji Hakari, voiced by Kazuya Nakai in the Japanese sub and Yuri Lowenthal in the English dub, and Hiromi Higuruma, voiced by Tomokazu Sugita in the Japanese sub and Ben Balmaceda in the English dub, influence key story events throughout the episodes. Fans will discover new favourites introduced in the series while appreciating Jujutsu Kaisen‘s already diverse and talented cast.

It’s often easy to predict the future in certain anime adaptations, especially when it follows a one-to-one manga adaptation. However, Jujutsu Kaisen gives its animation team freedom to add scenes that deepen the story and characters. In Season 3 Part 2, viewers can expect spectacular fight sequences, emotional and dramatic moments, and storylines that leave a lasting impact.

Currently, no release date exists for Season 3 Part 2, so fans must wait for the Culling Game to continue. With the manga concluded and Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo recently ending, anticipation for Part 2 grows.

Jujutsu Kaisen Season 3 Part 1 is streaming on Crunchyroll. Make sure to follow the Agents of Fandom socials for the latest entertainment news and reviews.
