As one month leaves and the next arrives, there is no shortage of new films coming to the box office. Here are 5 new movies releasing in May that you should check out.

1. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (May 6)

Marvel’s 28th film makes its long-awaited debut this month when Doctor Strange officially returns in a sequel film titled Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. With Sam Raimi directing his first comic book movie since Spider-Man 3 in 2007, this marks a return to the epic genre for the beloved filmmaker. This movie finds Dr. Stephen Strange as he deals with the opening of the great multiverse that comes with countless consequences, including alternate versions of himself, whose presence presents the greatest threat the Marvel Cinematic Universe has seen yet. Starring Academy Award-nominated Benedict Cumberbatch (The Power of the Dog), Elizabeth Olson, and Benedict Wong, this project is sure to be the comic book movie event of 2022.

2. Firestarter (May 13)

When I mention the movie Firestarter, you most likely think of the 1984 film starring a young Drew Barrymore, adapted from the Stephen King novel of the same name. And you wouldn’t be wrong to think that. But adding to the ever-growing world of remakes comes a new rendition of the movie this month. Zac Efron, Gloria Reuben, and Ryan Kiera Armstrong lead the project, in which a young girl is trying to understand how she mysteriously gained the ability to set things on fire with her mind. Skepticism always precedes the release of a remake, and this is no different in my eyes, but the sci-fi/action combination is sure to make for some entertaining movie-watching at the very least.

3. Men (May 20)

The production company A24 has garnered some serious hype in the past month with the release of the hit Everything Everywhere All At Once, and they are back for more in May. Alex Garland, who has directed Ex Machina, also for A24, as well as 2018’s sci-fi hit Annihilation returns to the big screen with Men, a brand-new original psychological horror.

Academy Award-nominated Jessie Buckley (The Lost Daughter) stars opposite Rory Kinnear in this film about a young woman who goes on a solo vacation to the English countryside after the death of her ex-husband, only to be met with terrors she never anticipated. The trailer for the film exudes tones of mystery and horror, so if you’re in need of a true adult-focused picture, this is the one for you. If this is even a sliver of what Ex Machina manages to be (go watch this movie if you haven’t!) then we are in for a real treat.

4. Top Gun: Maverick (May 20)

After 6 prior release dates, Tom Cruise is finally hitting the big screen once again as Maverick in Top Gun: Maverick. We’ll all be feeling the need for speed when we sit down for the follow-up to the stellar 1986 action flick. The blaring theme song and boisterous jet stunts are enough to warrant seeing this movie in IMAX if you feel so inclined. Serious action, massive movie stars, and the addition of an iconic film are more than enough to sell this one. The perfect hors d’oeuvre for a delicious summer of new movies.

5. The Bob’s Burgers Movie (May 27)

Bob, Linda, and the entire Belcher family make their way to the silver screen this month in what’s sure to be a hilarious, musical-filled adventure of a movie. With 12 television seasons and counting, there is no shortage of problems this animated family has been through, but will a sinkhole outside their already failing burger business be too much to tackle? With the voices of comedy greats like H. Jon Benjamin (Archer), Kristen Schaal (BoJack Horseman), and Zach Galifianakis (The Hangover), it’s hard to imagine your cheeks won’t hurt from smiling and laughing after this one.
