‘Sentenced to Be a Hero’ Review: Released on Good Behavior

I sentence you to be a hero!

It’s not often that a Shonen anime follows a criminal as the main character, but that’s exactly what Sentenced to Be a Hero does. Based on the light novel published by Kadokawa, this dark fantasy centers on prisoners forced to fight for humanity’s survival. As the world struggles against the Demon Blight, the Penal Heroes become humanity’s last hope. With a unique art style, memorable characters, and a story that keeps the tension high every episode, this anime feels like one of the most exciting new releases this season.

Set in a medieval fantasy world where magic and technology coexist, the series quickly and effectively builds its world. Goddesses exist, the military holds power, and the threat of the Demon Blight feels constant. The first twelve episodes deliver strong world-building while still leaving enough mystery to keep viewers invested. The visuals stand out, and Studio Kai delivers impressive animation throughout the season. Sentenced to Be a Hero feels like a series that knows exactly what it wants to be.

The main antagonists of the series are the Demon Blight and the Demon Lords associated with it. The Blight corrupts both living and nonliving things, turning them into dangerous monsters. Entire areas can become infected in seconds, which makes every battle feel intense and unpredictable. The mystery behind the Demon Blight is one of the strongest parts of the show. Very little is explained early on, and that uncertainty creates real tension. Viewers who enjoy strong villains and constant danger will appreciate how threatening the Demon Blight feels.

The Penal Hero Unit 9004 & the Holy Knights Take Center Stage

The main character, Xylo Forbartz, is a former Holy Knight who now leads Penal Hero Unit 9004. Yohei Azakami voices Xylo in the Japanese version, while David Matranga voices him in the English dub. Xylo stands out because he doesn’t act like a typical hero. He feels more realistic, more guarded, and far more dangerous than most shonen protagonists.

Teoritta becomes one of the most important characters in the series. Mayu Iizuka voices Teoritta in the Japanese version, while Emi Lo voices her in the English dub. She balances emotional moments with strong character development, which makes her easy to connect with.

Patausche Kivia is a Holy Knight Commander and adds stability to the group. Shizuka Ishigami voices Kivia in the Japanese version, while Dawn M. Bennet voices her in the English dub. Her presence helps balance the story’s darker tone while contributing to the larger narrative.

What really makes Unit 9004 stand out, though, is how well the entire group works together. Every character brings something different to the table. Some carry the emotional weight, others bring intensity, and a few add just enough personality to balance the darker tone. Instead of feeling like side characters, the whole unit feels important to the story. That chemistry is what makes the team fun to watch and keeps every episode feeling fresh.

Everything is Political in ‘Sentenced to Be a Hero’

One of the most interesting parts of Sentenced to Be a Hero is how political the story becomes. The military controls the Penal Heroes, and their missions often feel more strategic than heroic. Instead of saving the world for glory, these characters fight because they have no choice. Fans who enjoy anime with strong political storytelling, like Attack on Titan, will appreciate how this series handles power, control, and survival. The story constantly questions who the real heroes are and whether the system itself is the true villain.

Sentenced to Be a Hero delivers a darker take on the typical Shonen story. Instead of following a hopeful hero from the beginning, the series focuses on flawed characters trying to survive in a brutal world. That change alone makes it stand out from most new anime releases. With strong world-building, memorable characters, and a unique tone, this anime has the potential to become one of the most talked-about series this year. If you enjoy darker fantasy anime with emotional depth and high stakes, this is definitely a series worth watching.

And if the first season is only setting the stage, Season 2 could raise the stakes even higher. There are still mysteries surrounding the Demon Blight, unanswered questions about the Holy Knights, and plenty of character arcs that feel far from finished. If the series continues at this pace, the next season could easily become one of the biggest dark fantasy anime releases when it returns
