Through the first two seasons of Abbott Elementary, the series has rapidly become one of the top comedies on television. Star and Executive Producer Quinta Brunson recently won the 2023 Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, firmly planting Abbott Elementary Season 3 as one of the most anticipated projects of 2024.

The Abbott Elementary premiere is a one-hour special episode featuring many new characters and guest stars. While there’s a lot of flash to debut the new season, the same core group of characters makes the series special. Abbott Elementary Season 3 continues to expand on what makes the show so enjoyable while introducing plenty of exciting new wrinkles to the story.

While there are some additions and new shenanigans, the main squad still carries the load with fantastic chemistry. In particular, Janelle James‘ Ava Coleman, Lisa Ann Walter as Melissa Schemmenti, and Sheryl Lee Ralph as Barbara Howard steal the show. Their impeccable comedic timing is one of the crucial elements that make Abbott Elementary so great.

However, Abbott Elementary Season 3 continues to separate itself from other sitcoms in ways outside of comedy. Anyone who has been inside a classroom knows that their storytelling is an accurate depiction of the teaching profession. Being a teacher is a wild enough experience that excess fabrication isn’t necessary.

The hardships the cast conveys through the incredible writing is a realistic portrayal of the day-to-day struggles of being a teacher. While the style of the show is similar to The Office or Parks and Recreation, Abbott Elementary is far less exaggerated. Not every school has a principal as chaotic as Ava Coleman. However, the lack of resources and the difficulty of the career are very accurately portrayed.

The Abbott Elementary Season 3 premiere is a fantastic start to the season. Through two seasons, the series has become one of the most popular sitcoms on television, so there’s no reason to doubt the creators’ ability to maintain the momentum.

The perfect blend of comedy and reality makes this series special. Thankfully, that formula is carried into the Abbott Elementary Season 3 premiere. There are still plenty of cringeworthy moments for those with experience in the world of teaching. However, the awareness the career receives makes it all worth it.

Teaching is difficult. The tougher the job is for the teachers, the worse things get for students. It’s an impossible task to do the best job possible with the lack of funding, resources, and support education receives. Abbott Elementary perfectly depicts the struggle while delivering light, comedic relief simultaneously.
