‘What If…?’ Director on Season 3: “We Could Have Done More Mutants This Season”

At least we’re getting Alison Sealy-Smith’s Storm!

Marvel’s What If…? Season 3 features a plethora of characters making their debut in the series, including X-Men ’97‘s Storm (Alison Sealy-Smith). Storm is an interesting addition to the series because she’s the first character outside of original creations like Kahhori (Devery Jacobs) to make her What If…? debut without appearing in the live-action Marvel Cinematic Universe first.

However, in an exclusive interview with Agents of Fandom, What If…? Season 3 director Bryan Andrews revealed that if he knew Disney had the rights to the character, he would’ve liked to add Hugh Jackman‘s Wolverine. Unfortunately, the new season was too far in development for him to make the addition at that time.

In hindsight, I think we were kicking ourselves because, you know, it takes a while to set these things up and do these things. But it’s like we could have done more mutants this season, oh my gosh what the heck, but because at the time we didn’t know that they’re (Disney) gonna have all the Fox stuff back, you know what I mean, so we could have had a Hugh Jackman thing and you know, but oh well. Maybe, maybe there’ll be some (more What If…?) in the future and then we get to party with those guys. But at least we got Storm, that’s awesome.

Considering Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine is one of the most popular comic book characters to ever grace the screen, it makes sense that Andrews would’ve utilized him for What If…? Season 3 if the timing had worked out.

However, even though the series is concluding for the foreseeable future, his comment about potentially being able to “party with those guys” in the future provides hope that a new iteration of What If…? could eventually return. In a universe with infinite possibilities, anything is possible. Although Bryan Andrews and Marvel Studios couldn’t add Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine to the series, it’s still very exciting to see Alison Sealy-Smith’s Storm debut in What If…? Season 3 after the success of X-Men ’97 on Disney+.
