The Mythosaur: Everything You Need To Know About Mandalore’s Giant, Mythical Beast

Learn more about ‘The Mandalorian’s’ newest potential threat, the Mythosaur.

*Warning: spoilers ahead for The Mandalorian episode two*

A legendary Mythosaur can be seen briefly in the latest episode of The Mandalorian. The creature is highly symbolic amongst Mandalorian clans, and can only be found in the Outer Rim world of Mandalore. Season three explores the thought-to-be-abandoned planet, so let’s learn more about one of the wonders that still remains.

Mytho-what?

Mythosaurs are giant, reptilian creatures native to Mandalore. Taungs (forebearers of the planet), led by Mandalore the First, aimed to exterminate the species after establishing the dominance of their habitat. The beasts were too dangerous and presented way too much power to coexist peacefully on Mandalore.

Following the Taungs’ success, the skeletons of the Mythosaurs were used in cities as monuments of the Mandalorians’ efforts. They acted as a warning for anyone who visited Mandalore to be aware of their power.

The Mythosaur plays a huge role in Mandalorian culture

You may recognise this skeletal symbol from previous seasons of The Mandalorian. It appears above The Armorer’s forge and is engraved on many sets of armour. Different clans use various symbols to identify themselves, such as the Mudhorn on Din Djarin‘s armour. The Mythosaur, however, is the only sigil universally associated with all Mandalorians.

Kuiil also mentions the Mythosaur to Din in season one. Whilst Mando tries to mount a Blurrg, he makes a passing comment about how his ancestors once rode the mighty beasts.

Furthermore, in Mandalorian folklore, a helmet forged from the skeleton of a Mythosaur is worn by Mandalore’s sole leader; Mand’alor. The Darksaber later replaces the helmet as the weapon wielded by the ruler, becoming the new symbol of might.

How will the Mythosaur affect Mando’s upcoming journey?

Seeing as the Mythosaur is believed by all existing Mandalorians to be extinct, who knows what else is around the corner for Din and Bo-Katan on their journey through Mandalore.

The beasts presented quite a challenge for their ancestors, so it will be interesting to see how the pair deal with this new problem in the coming weeks. Perhaps an epic battle is underway? Or perhaps this solves Bo-Katan’s issue of acquiring the Darksaber in battle, as anyone who defeats a Mythosaur is worthy of wielding the saber in the eyes of a true Mandalorian.
