‘Invincible’ Season 4 Review: The Darkest (and Maybe Best) Season Yet

To face his new foes, Mark will need to be…Invincible!

The following Invincible Season 4 review is spoiler-free and only covers Episodes 1-6.

It’s an incredible time to be a fan of superhero television, especially for those into the more mature side of the genre. With Daredevil: Born Again set to debut on March 24th and the final season of The Boys coming shortly after, it’s Invincible Season 4 that starts things off, and the series sets the bar very high.

While every season so far has been enjoyable, Invincible Season 4 is a true return to form. Creator Robert Kirkman and showrunner Simon Racioppa continue to prove that Invincible is among the very best series in the genre. Season 4 is arguably the darkest of the entire series so far, as Mark Grayson (Steven Yeun) faces some of his toughest challenges yet, both physically and emotionally.

The Line Between Right and Wrong Has Never Been Thinner

It’s truly shocking just how much story is packed into each episode, but somehow, the season still manages to flow beautifully. There’s one episode in the middle that, despite providing some important character development, stops the momentum and feels a bit out of place. However, outside of the one outlier, Invincible Season 4 is action-packed from start to finish, with gut-wrenching twists and turns throughout.

Although every season of Invincible features Mark Grayson getting beaten to a pulp and facing tough personal decisions, the newest installment takes his pain to another level. However, it’s not the physical trauma that is Mark’s greatest threat; it’s the emotional damage.

As his fears grow stronger and stronger that he won’t be able to protect his family, his decision-making skills diminish as well. While Invincible is stronger than he’s ever been, with more allies than he has ever had, Mark remains closer to a darker path than he has ever been before.

If the impending doom of Viltrumite attacks and constant threats toward Earth weren’t enough, Mark’s greatest challenge of the season might just be having to get along with his dad. Omni-Man (J.K. Simmons) is as central a character as Mark throughout the first six episodes, and his journey is fascinating.

While he has clearly changed for the better and feels deep regret for his past actions, that doesn’t change the immense pain he has caused his sons, Mark and Oliver (Christian Convery), his wife Debbie (Sandra Oh) and the entirety of planet Earth. The series beautifully explores the difficulties of healing family trauma. Even though the offender may be ready to make amends, that doesn’t mean the same will be true for those he has hurt.

‘Invincible’ Season 4 Perfectly Balances Action and Emotion

When the protagonists have their backs against the wall and the stakes are higher than ever, it’s important to maintain a positive throughline amid the chaos and darkness. Although she faces challenges of her own and isn’t quite as heavily featured as in the previous season, Atom Eve (Gillian Jacobs) plays an important role in Invincible Season 4, keeping Mark’s head on straight.

While Invincible has always featured incredible voice-acting performances, it’s Jacobs, alongside Steven Yeun and J.K. Simmons, who really stand out this season for the emotion they bring to each episode. The first six episodes set up an epic conclusion to the season, and each is action-packed and filled with moments that tug at viewers’ heartstrings.
