It’s been awfully quiet on the Owen Wilson front since he starred alongside Jennifer Lopez in the rom-com Marry Me almost one year ago, to date. Today, we finally got our first glimpse at IFC’s upcoming comedy, Paint. What’s more, Wilson seems to be taking inspiration from The Joy of Painting host, Bob Ross, in the teaser trailer.
What is Paint about?
If you’ve ever found yourself thinking, “I want to see Owen Wilson embrace his calm demeanor and soothing voice for a couple of hours,” you might just be in luck. Paint follows a public TV painter named Carl Nargle, portrayed by Wilson, who is adored by his widespread audiences. Girls are falling at his feet; fans are hanging onto his every word. All until Carl has quite a stroke of bad luck—literally—and a younger, female painter comes onto the scene. The antagonist, Ambrosia Long, is played by Ciara Renée. Suddenly, Ambrosia begins to attract much of the same crowd and leaves Carl navigating his way through a rivalry that threatens to steal his stardom.
Inspired by Bob Ross
Any mention of Ross is absent from the trailer, but it is evident that this film will centre around the creativity from the beloved, late painter, who sadly passed away at age 52 in 1995. Wilson’s soft-spoken tone (and, most noticeably, the big hair) is an impeccable fit for the dramatisation of Ross’ character. In addition, Carl’s line from before he’s seen hurling a can of paint at the wall midway through the trailer, “you’re entitled to your favorite TV show—it’s what makes this country great,” straps us in for a wild time.
Who is in the Paint cast?
Directed by Brit McAdams, The cast of Paint features Wendi McLendon-Covey, who has previously starred in rom-com classics, 10 Things I Hate About You and Bridesmaids, as well as Stephen Root (Succesion, Barry) and Michaela Watkins (The Dropout). The energy throughout the trailer suggests Paint is going to be one hell of a journey, and you may want to add it to your list of ‘underdog’ releases for 2023.
Wilson is credited as the TVA agent Mobius M. Mobius in the Disney+ hit series, Loki, whose season two will release this summer. Paint is set to debut in theatres on April 7.
