‘Gen V’ Season 2 Review: Some of the Very Best of ‘The Boys’ Universe

A bloody good time.

Since its debut in 2019, The Boys has been one of the best shows on television. However, despite the high bar, when Gen V arrived for its first season in 2023, it rivaled any of the previous installments from its predecessor. Now, the premiere of Gen V Season 2 continues the trend of top-tier television within this universe from creators Eric Kripke, Craig Rosenberg, and Evan Goldberg, as well as showrunners Michele Fazekas and Tara Butters.

The tragic loss of Chance Perdomo is immediately felt upon Season 2’s opening, as his joyous, charismatic presence is missed. However, the writing team does a very good job of addressing and honoring his absence. The entire cast is still at the top of their game throughout Gen V Season 2, with incredible performances to match the thrilling story, massive stakes, and in-depth world-building.

Marie Moreau Proves To Be the Most Compelling Character in ’The Boys’ Universe

The entire cast deserves their flowers for their performances in Gen V Season 2, but the star in both screen time and gravitas is undoubtedly Jaz Sinclair as Marie Moreau. While Marie’s story and power set already make her interesting enough, Sinclair’s embodiment of the character has enough charisma and charm to go toe-to-toe with anyone in The Boys universe.

Although Sinclair is the series lead and standout, the entire gang delivers great performances. Lizze Broadway brings a sense of levity and is wonderful comedic relief as Emma, while her arc tells an emotional story that provides layers of pain and relatability to the character. However, while all the actors playing the team of heroes are at the top of their game, it’s the newcomer and antagonist, Cypher (Hamish Linklater), who steals the show with a terrifying performance.

Despite its greatness, the biggest issue with recent seasons of The Boys has been the overall story becoming stagnant. How long can our protagonists have a mere sliver of hope, only to be ultimately thwarted by Homelander (Antony Starr) and Vought? This time, old foes and new friends team up for a riveting adventure filled with turbulent chaos, orchestrated by Cypher and his benefactors behind the scenes. While last season left Marie and her friends with their backs against the wall, Gen V Season 2 features their stakes rising to new heights while their power and abilities grow in unison, combining for an incredible season of television.

It brings the classic gore and debauchery that fans of the universe know and love, with a unique story that will keep the audience on the edge of their seats throughout the entire season.
