‘The Penguin’ Episode 2 Recap & Review: Sofia Falcone Chases a Rat

The Hangman is not to be trifled with.

Warning: Spoilers ahead for The Penguin Episode 2, “Inside Man.”

HBO’s new hit series The Penguin is taking the world by storm with an excellent premiere, and they keep the momentum going with a stellar second installment. Oz Cobb (Colin Farrell) continues to dodge bullets literally and metaphorically for a thrilling and action-packed television episode.

While Farrell’s performance is outstanding once again, it’s Cristin Milioti as Sofia Falcone who steals the show right from the first minute. Her terrifying nightmares provide an introduction to the episode while also being prevalent throughout the entire runtime. She’s not a character that should be messed with, and Milioti plays the role to perfection. Check out all the details from our The Penguin Episode 2, “Inside Man,” recap below!

Salvatore Maroni Takes the Bait in “Inside Man”

With the world thinking Salvatore Maroni (Clancy Brown) is responsible for the death of Alberto Falcone (Michael Zegen), The Penguin checks in on him in prison to see what “The Boss” thinks about his latest scheme. Although his wife, Nadia Maroni (Shohreh Aghdashloo), is in attendance for their meeting and denounces Oz, Salvatore is wearing his ring that Cobb returned to him around prison, further adding to the speculation that he is responsible for Alberto’s death. Maroni ultimately decides to partner with Oswald and help him steal the Falcone family’s drop shipment in The Penguin Episode 2.

Unfortunately, the transfer goes poorly when The Penguin is forced to accompany the drop shipment personally and gets caught in the crossfire. While he escapes without any major injury, one of Maroni’s goons is shot and sent to the hospital, potentially incriminating Oz if the new head of the Falcone family, Luca (Scott Cohen), were to have him kidnapped — which, of course, he does. Sofia tears the men in her family apart for their lack of concern over the botched job, claiming Maroni has an inside man within their ranks, allowing them to steal their shipments.

Oz Cobb Proves To Be a Criminal Mastermind in ‘The Penguin’

Although Oz should likely be the top suspect since he was one of the few survivors of the operation, he’s able to weasel his way out of consideration and gain favor with Sofia Falcone, though, he’s not immediately convinced that he can be trusted. Still, as she’s constantly berated by protestors who are upset she’s no longer in Arkham Asylum, her defenses wear down throughout The Penguin Episode 2.

However, despite slowly progressing to Sofia’s good side, Cobb still has a wide array of problems to deal with. His top girl, Eve Karlo (Carmen Ejogo), reveals she knows he killed Alberto Falcone and used her as a fake alibi, and she’s concerned for him and the wellbeing of her girls. Oz reassures her everything will be fine, but his very next operation is thwarted when his driver and protege Victor (Rhenzy Feliz) botches his assignment and puts The Penguin’s life in danger. Oswald murders Maroni’s goon so he can’t rat him out, and he slips the knife into the pocket of one of Sofia’s henchmen to frame him.
