Warning: Spoilers ahead for The Penguin Episode 6, “Gold Summit.”
The Penguin continues to prove it’s one of the best series of the year with each passing week. Matt Reeves and writer/showrunner Lauren LeFranc‘s gritty, grounded storytelling style becomes more captivating with each episode, and The Penguin Episode 6 follows the same trend. Some time has passed in-universe since the previous installment and Oz Cobb (Colin Farrell) grows increasingly more powerful by the minute.
However, as his influence expands throughout Gotham City, so do his challenges. With each step closer he gets to the top of the food chain, a new predator sharpens its teeth for its own personal bite of The Penguin. Check out all the details from our recap of The Penguin Episode 6, “Gold Summit,” below!
The Penguin’s Empire Grows in “Gold Summit”
Although weeks have passed since the previous episode, Oz continues to build his workforce in the underground tunnels beneath Crown Heights in Gotham. The operation is becoming more advanced by the day, as their measly two Bliss plants have expanded into an entire farm. Meanwhile, Victor Aguilar (Rhenzy Feliz) is growing more stylish in his dress and has even begun carrying his own gun. While he’s involved as a drop man for the Bliss, his primary job is taking care of Oswald’s mother, Francis (Deirdre O’Connell).
Unfortunately, when Vic is pressed by gang members from his past, he takes his first life by shooting his foe “Squid” (Jared Abrahamson) in the neck. Vic’s incredibly shaken up by his actions, but there’s no time to grieve. The new partnership of Sofia Gigante (Cristin Milioti) and Salvatore Maroni (Clancy Brown) complicates things by sending a message. The pair kill drug dealers of the Sullivan gang, which forces Oz to give away the Bliss for free to hook new partners and clientele throughout Gotham City in The Penguin Episode 6.
Sofia Gigante and Salvatore Maroni Team Up in ‘The Penguin’
Although it’s an unlikely partnership, Salvatore and Sofia get along quite well. Sofia is clearly the one in charge, using Salvatore’s grief from losing his family as a tool for her revenge against Oz. Their initial efforts to find The Penguin aren’t fruitful, but they eventually find a photo of Oz’s “girlfriend,” Eve Karlow (Carmen Ejogo), to whom Sofia pays a visit. Eve initially has no interest in helping Sofia and is ready to face her death to protect Oz. However, when Sofia reveals Oz was complicit in covering up Carmine Falcone’s (Mark Strong) murders of her fellow sex workers, she decides to reveal his location in Crown Point.
Meanwhile, Oz gathers the prospective gangs he wants to run his Bliss. With the threat of a Gigante/Maroni partnership, Oz suggests the territory and manpower of those present are enough for them to stand up to the crime families. In a rousing speech that gains the trust of the gang heads, the “Gold Summit” concludes with the members cracking open cans of Gold beer in solidarity with Oz in The Penguin Episode 6.
‘The Penguin’ Episode 6 Review: HBO Continues To Strike Gold
Oswald Cobb uses his newfound power to return electricity to Crown Heights and convince the fellow gangs of Gotham to invest in his vision for the city. While he does a few things that benefit others, it’s never out of the goodness of his heart; it’s always to become more powerful. Unfortunately for Oz, just when he’s at his highest, things come crumbling down.
The Penguin Episode 6 concludes with Sofia walking in on Francis and Vic dancing in their apartment, holding a crowbar ready to take them out. With only two episodes remaining, the series is shaping up for an epic finale.
