What’s in store for Guillermo de la Cruz in the vampire comedy’s final season?

For many years, the vampire genre has dominated pop culture with shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and movies like Twilight. One of the more recent additions to the bloodsucking class of television is What We Do in the Shadows, which first aired in 2019, and will conclude in 2024 with Season 6. In a recent interview, Agents of Fandom spoke with star Harvey Guillén, who plays Guillermo de la Cruz, about his role in the final season.

In a conversation with Aisha Shabeese of Agents of Fandom at Toronto Comicon, Guillén talked about his character’s role in Season 6:

“I think this year is going to be a renaissance year for Guillermo. Things didn’t work out the way he had planned for the last 15 years with wanting to be a vampire. But, people evolve every day, and what we wanted 15 years ago, maybe a different version of that can occur in present time, so I feel like he’s realizing what he really wants.”

‘What We Do in the Shadows’ Will Conclude With Season 6

The series has received acclaim from fans and critics alike and even won an Emmy for Outstanding Fantasy/Sci-Fi Costumes to go along with its 21 nominations. Harvey Guillén also received a nomination for Best Supporting Actor at the 2024 Saturn Awards. Guillén has poured his heart and soul into playing Guillermo de la Cruz, and an unforgettable performance is surely in store for the final season.

The character has spent the majority of What We Do in the Shadows attempting to transition from Nandor’s (Kayvan Novak) familiar to a full-blown creature of the night. Season 5 saw Guillermo look to another vampire for assistance, which he later learned was the greatest offense a familiar can make against their master.

The nature of Guillén’s comments suggests that his character will find a sense of clarity during the show’s final season. There is currently no release date slated, but a late 2024 or 2025 release seems likely given Guillén’s recent comments on production.
