‘The Boys’ Season 4, Episode 5 Recap & Review: Suped up Sheep? Why Not?

Warning: Spoilers ahead for The Boys Season 4, Episode 5 “Beware the Jabberwok, My Son.”

Prime Video‘s hit superhero project follows up one of the best episodes in the series with another strong installment. The Boys Season 4, Episode 5 is now streaming everywhere and takes Billy Butcher (Karl Urban) and the gang out into the sticks.

Meanwhile, Hughie (Jack Quaid) deals with unimaginable atrocities at the hospital. Ensure you caught every important detail with our recap of The Boys Season 4, Episode 5 “Beware the Jabberwok, My Son.”

Hughie’s Dad Wakes Up After Taking Compound V in ‘The Boys’ Season 4, Episode 5

The Boys Season 4, Episode 5 opens with Cameron Coleman (Matthew Edison) and The Deep (Chace Crawford) revealing Phases 7-19 of the VCU (Vought Cinematic Universe) at the V52 Expo. Homelander (Antony Starr) watches and reflects on his actions in the previous episode. Sister Sage (Susan Heyward) tries to talk to him, but he’s completely zoned out. Back at the hospital, Hughie and his mom (Rosemarie DeWitt) talk to Hugh (Simon Pegg) and he seems healthy after taking Compound V.

Back at the Foundation building, Starlight (Erin Moriarty) watches a Firecracker (Valorie Curry) stream and stares at the inside of her defaced building. MM (Laz Alonso) and Monique (Frances Turner) talk to their daughter Janine (Liyou Abere) after she got into a fight at school, and Monique tells Marvin he has to fix this. Meanwhile, Joe Kessler (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) tries to convince Butcher to take out Homelander just the two of them.

Back at HQ, Annie asks what happened with Colin (Elliot Knight) but Frenchie (Tomer Capone) says he went out of town. Butcher tells them about the virus that originated in the Gen V spin-off show, and they agree to steal it from Victoria Neuman (Claudia Doumit).

Back at V52 Expo, Sister Sage and A-Train (Jessie T. Usher) talk about the leak and he offers help but she walks away. MM and Butcher then visit Stan (Giancarlo Esposito) in prison and offer him a presidential pardon and custody of Neuman’s daughter, Zoe (Olivia Morandin), if he helps take down the Vice Presidential nominee.

Homelander and Ryan Share a Bonding Moment in “Beware the Jabberwok, My Son”

The Boys Season 4, Episode 4 continues at the hospital when Daphne gives Hughie her old engagement ring to use with Annie and Hugh starts showing signs of forgetfulness. The Boys arrive to a farm with Stan where animals have been injected with permanent and temporary V and tested with the virus. Victoria visits the farm while Butcher frees a rabbit injected with temp V. Back at V52, a trailer for Training A-Train starring Will Ferrell plays while Cameron Coleman talks to Deep.

Director Adam Bourke (P.J. Byrne) pitches Ryan (Cameron Crovetti) on his new superhero show, but Ryan says he doesn’t want to do it. Out in the hallway, Homelander tells Ryan he doesn’t have to do anything he doesn’t want to do anymore.

Back at the farm, Stan and Victoria get into an argument and The Boys find V’d up chickens in the barn. In Vought Tower, Cameron dumps Ashley (Colby Minifie) while Sister Sage and Firecracker take subtle jabs at each other.

On the V farm, Annie punches Victoria in the face after she gets under her skin. Meanwhile, Butcher finds the rabbit he freed earlier sitting on the ground with tentacles coming out of it, so he squashes it. Back at V52, A-Train tells Ashley he’s the leak and blackmails her into helping him get Sage off his back. Over at the hospital, Hughie returns to the room to find his dad no longer in bed.

Ryan and Homelander Teach Adam Bourke a Lesson in ‘The Boys’ Season 4′ Episode 4

Hughie and his mother search the hospital and find Hugh in a room where he’s killed another patient. They startle him as he doesn’t remember where he is; he kills another patient and then also murders a security guard. At V52 Expo, Sam (Asa Germann) and Cate (Maddie Phillips) from Gen V come out on stage to promote their new comedy, Flipped. Backstage, Adam’s assistant Bonnie (Conni Miu) tells Ryan and Homelander that Adam is making her uncomfortable.

They make Adam apologize and tell Bonnie to slap him, and she does several times. Back on the farm, Annie encourages Frenchie to get some help, and they get attacked by V’d up sheep. They run into the barn to find Sameer Shah (Omid Abtahi) hiding, who tells them there’s only one dose of the virus left. MM gets everyone on the same page, and they agree to inject the body with the virus to kill the V’d up sheep. Their plan works, and all the sheep die to the virus.

Back at the hospital, Hugh charges towards Daphne and Hughie stands in the way to finally get through to him. Meanwhile, MM sends Stan back to jail since he couldn’t deliver on the virus, but Victoria pops the driver of his car’s head, and frees him.

Over at Vought Tower, Homelander brings in Cameron Coleman and tells everyone he was the leak. The camera then pans outside the room to Ashley, it’s revealed she set him up, and The Seven beats him to death.

Butcher and Kessler Develop a Diabolical Plan in ‘The Boys’ Season 4

Frenchie turns himself in at the police station for committing murders while Kimiko (Karen Fukuhara) tries to get up with him, but fails. Back at the hospital, Hughie gives his dad a dose of a drug that kills him so he won’t hurt anyone else. The episode ends with Butcher and Kessler talking to Sameer in the barn after cutting off his leg, telling him they need him to make more of the virus.

While perhaps not as strong as the previous episode, The Boys Season 4, Episode 5 is still a splendid installment worthy of praise. The episode effectively utilizes the unlikely pairings trope, leaving Butcher and The Boys working with Victoria and Stan. Things are ramping up with only three episodes remaining, and time will tell if the virus from Gen V will be what finally takes down Homelander.
