‘The Summer I Turned Pretty’: Season 3, Episode 3 Recap & Review: The Final Bellyache

Wake me up when this nightmare engagement is over.

Of course, Naruto Uzumaki makes a cameo as an action figure in Steven’s (Sean Kaufman) bedroom, because in typical Naruto fashion, The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 3 Episode 3 is mostly filler, until the epic ending. “Last Supper” starts off with Belly (Lola Tung) and Jeremiah (Gavin Casalegno) excitedly making out to Billie Eilish‘s “BIRDS OF A FEATHER,” and Jeremiah finally getting down on one knee for a proper proposal.

He’s also managed to get a ring. Or wait, is that even a ring? It’s barely visible. In fact, it’s so hard to see that Jeremiah has to put on glasses to see it. This is the first time Jeremiah has worn glasses the entirety of the show, by the way. This ring will continue to be the subject of many jokes throughout our The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 3, Episode 3 recap, so just you wait.

Unfortunately, the Staylor Side-Plot (or the SSP) consumes an exorbitant amount of screen time in “Last Supper,” without much actually happening. Taylor’s (Rain Spencer) Mom, Lucinda (Kristen Connolly), finds out her salon is going out of business, occupying far too much time in The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 3, Episode 3.

However, it all leads to a scene where Belly tells Taylor she’s engaged, leading Taylor to cough up her drink and immediately ask about Jeremiah’s cheating. Taylor continues to act as a voice for the audience throughout the episode. When Belly shows Taylor the ring, she asks if it’s a “diamond or a sliver of tinfoil.” Thanks for representing all of us, Tay.

The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 3 Episode 3 features a long montage of Belly pampering herself in preparation for Susannah’s (Rachel Blanchard) garden dedication ceremony, with Belly going as far as to shave her legs not once, but twice. The song of choice for this montage? Sabrina Carpenter‘s “Please Please Please.” Oh Jenny Han, you sly fox.

Belly and Jeremiah are under the impression that Conrad (Christopher Briney) will not be attending the ceremony, so they’re set on telling the family about their engagement at the lunch afterward, while telling Conrad at a later date to soften the blow. Unfortunately, to their surprise, Conrad is in attendance. He caught a last-minute red-eye flight as per Agnes’ (Zoé De Grand Maison) suggestion, who pushes him to be around Belly and Jeremiah more so he can work on getting over his feelings for Belly.

Sadly for Agnes, things don’t go as planned in The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 3, Episode 3. As Jeremiah gives his speech, Belly and Conrad lock eyes, time stops, and it becomes increasingly evident that Belly has forgotten the younger brother is even there as she falls deeper in love with the eldest sibling.

The lack of juicy drama in “Last Supper” is instantly quenched in the last fifteen minutes. My goodness, this entire scene epitomizes secondhand embarrassment. Steven and Conrad converse like strangers, Belly steals a glance at Conrad whenever she can with her fiancée next to her, and Adam (Tom Everett Scott) and Jeremiah both order the most expensive meal on the menu, despite Laurel (Jackie Chung) offering to pay for the meal. Then, Adam Fisher decides to open his big, stupid mouth.

After Laurel gives nice toasts to her kids, Adam takes a different route in his toasts to Conrad and Jeremiah. He praises Conrad as “smart” and “selfless,” after all, he is the favorite. However, he then begins berating Jeremiah as a disappointment in comparison to his brother. While he’s not wrong, maybe his dead wife’s remembrance ceremony isn’t the best time to bring it up.

As Jeremiah sits there and takes the roast, Belly takes it upon herself to announce their engagement to the table, despite previously agreeing with Jeremiah to hold off since Conrad is in attendance. Everyone acts as though they’re on Punk’d, until they realize that Ashton Kutcher is nowhere to be found. This isn’t a joke. These two people who most definitely should not be getting married are tying the knot.

Laurel immediately asks if Belly’s pregnant, and Adam tells Jere he isn’t getting Susannah’s ring. When Belly assures Adam that she’s already got a ring, we get easily the funniest moment in the entire series thus far. Belly’s face in the midst of chaos is incredible in this scene. It’s not clocking to Laurel that Belly’s standing on business! As the seafood tower arrives at the table, the lunch abruptly ends as Belly is forced to go home with her family (as opposed to leaving with Jeremiah). Everyone angrily rushes out of the restaurant…except poor Conrad.

Throughout the entire sequence in The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 3 Episode 3, Conrad remains dead silent. He only manages to utter the word “no” after Steven asks if he knew. As the somber “No Surprises” by Radiohead echoes, Conrad’s face is still stuck in this devastated expression; everything went wrong for him.

In an Instagram Story published last year, Jenny Han claimed that The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 3 was to have no filler episodes. Clearly, she lied, because outside of the garden ceremony and the lunch after it, this episode was quite boring. What do you mean I have to wait a whole week after that?

Chris Briney has been knocking it out of the park with his performance as Conrad this season, despite the lack of screen time. He has managed to convey every bit of Conrad’s emotional growth and maturity, as well as his deep heartache, through simple facial expressions. His expression of yearning at the end of this episode was nothing short of heartbreaking.

Lola Tung continues to be hilarious, but her comedy is underutilized. Belly is usually at the center of the drama, but her comedic timing is often sidelined. When she pulls out that ring to show off to Laurel, it’s a genuine laugh-out-loud moment. Hopefully, The Summer I Turned Pretty features more of this going forward.

Best Moment: Belly standing on business with her wedding ring. Just so hilarious. That’s going down in teen drama her-story.

Worst Moment: THEY LEFT CONRAD THERE ALL ALONE!!!

Best Needle Drop: My heart sank to my belly (see what I did there) when I heard those first notes of “No Surprises.”

Episode MVP: Every character that showed any sort of disdain for this wedding. They were all correct, and everyone’s reactions were equally hilarious.

Quote of the Episode: “You are together. If you want to take the next step, move in together…foster a cat.”
