Warning: Spoilers ahead for Only Murders in the Building Season 4, Episode 5, “Adaptation”
After a few weeks of slower pace and a more intense focus on character development, Only Murders in the Building returns to the investigation with multiple new suspects who need to be questioned. Oliver (Martin Short), Mabel (Selena Gomez), and Charles (Steve Martin) are ready to take their growth from the past few episodes and solve a murder.
A new group of suspects also means avenues for new theories, murder boards, and interrogations. The trio returns to the movie set to investigate Bev Melon’s (Molly Shannon) claim that the person who murdered Sazz Pataki (Jane Lynch) is part of the production team. Check out all the details in our Only Murders in the Building Season 4, Episode 5 recap of “Adaptation” below!
Imposter Syndrome Looms Like a Dark Cloud in “Adaptation”
The episode introduces the writer of the trio’s film, Marshall (Jin Ha), as he struggles with imposter syndrome. He is dressed up in what he believes a writer should look like, mimicking others instead of being himself. However, he’s not the only one dealing with these demons throughout Only Murders in the Building Season 4, Episode 5.
Mabel and Oliver are also struggling with confidence but in totally different fields. Although she’s no longer a primary suspect, Bev Melon is eager to hear Mabel’s ideas for new content. She believes the movie about their podcast will be a gold mine, and she’s looking to invest in Mabel even further. Unfortunately, Mabel feels undeserving of the fame and opportunities thrust upon her.
Oliver, on the other hand, deals with problems of his own making. Since he was too afraid to propose to Loretta (Meryl Streep), he now fears she’s cheating on him with her hot new co-star. While everyone on Earth would benefit from therapy, these characters in Only Murders in the Building Season 4, Episode 5, really need the help of a professional.
‘OMITB’ Season 4 Heats Up With New Suspects
Typically, when someone finds out they’re a murder suspect, they freak out. However, this isn’t the case for Marshall, who was even more terrified about the trio having more notes for the film he wrote. His relief over finding out they were investigating him rules him out as a suspect. He also delivers some valuable information to Mabel, Oliver, and Charles in Only Murders in the Building Season 4, Episode 5.
They build a new murder board with the writer’s help and pitch their theories to him to see how believable they sound. Unfortunately, throughout their process, they realize their timeline doesn’t make sense. There’s no possible way one person could’ve committed the murder. The death of Sazz Pataki had to involve at least two people. This breakthrough places the directors of the film, the Brothers sisters (Siena Werber and Catherine Cohen), at the top of the list.
