‘Only Murders in the Building’ Season 4 Review: The Trio Takes Tinsel Town

The beloved trio is back with a new murder mystery to solve and a new locale.

The following review is spoiler-free and encompasses Only Murders in the Building Season 4, Episodes 1-7.

With three seasons in the books, Only Murders in the Building returns to Hulu and Disney+ internationally for a brand-new mystery. The series once again features exciting guest stars. Still, the trio of Charles-Haden Savage (Steve Martin), Oliver Putnam (Martin Short), and Mabel Mora (Selena Gomez) carry each scene with their incredible chemistry and charm.

The first seven episodes break down a unique mystery surrounding the murder of Charles’ friend and stunt double Sazz Patacki (Jane Lynch). While the murder occurs at the end of the third season similarly to past installments, this season peels open the onion in a fresh and new way to avoid repetition. The comedy in the series remains top-tier, and Only Murders in the Building Season 4’s murder mystery is the most puzzling to solve yet.

Although Oliver’s return to the stage came with many bumps and bruises during his time in the limelight last season, he remains unphased as the gang now takes their talents to the big screen. While the premise is similar to last season, John Hoffman, Steve Martin, and the whole writing team do a wonderful job of making the story feel entirely unique.

Each episode uses home movies and various forms of cinematography to unveil various layers of the mystery, providing odes to various movie tropes while utilizing multiple different camera styles throughout Only Murders in the Building Season 4. However, all the unique styles don’t come across as just novelty; they also deliver voyeuristic narratives that add intrigue and suspense to the story.

While The Arconia has always been a focal point of Only Murders in the Building as the building, the change of pace and scenery to Los Angeles is an enjoyable addition as the city works as a character in and of itself. Although both Charles and Oliver already have experience in Hollywood, the town where everyone is chasing their dreams highlights the imposter syndrome within the group.

No matter how high their stars rise, struggles with fame, success, and even their relationships keep the story relatable despite the far-fetched plotlines. Regardless of where the trio travels, the heart and soul of Only Murders in the Building remains intact as long as the group stays together. The setting change to Los Angeles for a large portion of the series is a refreshing twist, while the core of what makes the show beloved shines through consistently throughout the new season.

With Charles, Oliver, and Mabel experimenting with the possibility of being involved in a movie about their lives and podcast, it opens up an exciting avenue for new guest stars throughout Only Murders in the Building Season 4. Highlighting the new additions are Zach Galifianakis, Eva Longoria, and Eugene Levy, who play the roles of Oliver, Mabel, and Charles respectively in the film. Although they’re the standouts outside of the main cast, there are also plenty of exciting unannounced guest stars for the season as well.

Despite the additions bringing a fun new twist to the show, it’s actually series regulars Howard (Michael Cyril Creighton) and Detective Williams (Da’Vine Joy Randolph), whose presence is felt the most throughout the season. They both provide impeccable comedic timing and play essential roles in the story. In typical Only Murders in the Building fashion, guest stars, cameos, and strong supporting acting greatly enhance the series.

Only Murders in the Building Season 4 features an exciting new mystery, a star-studded cast, and the trio of Martin Short, Steve Martin, and Selena Gomez, who continue to do no wrong whenever they’re on the screen together. While it’s easy to think the series could get stale after a few seasons, the show continuously finds new directions for the story and unique twists and turns for the mystery.

Although the story slightly drags throughout the middle of the season, Only Murders in the Building is on pace to deliver one of its best installments yet through seven episodes. The mystery is successfully challenging to piece together, and the leading trio continues to shine as one of the best in television.
