‘Dragon Ball Daima’ Episode 4 Recap & Review: Goku vs. the Demon Realm Army

Goku can’t help but get himself into trouble.

Warning: Spoilers for Dragon Ball Daima Episode 4, “Chatty,” ahead.

Akira Toriyama‘s Dragon Ball Daima continues to find its footing as the series spends more time in the Demon Realm. It may not be the high-intense action or thrilling story that Dragon Ball fans have seen in Dragon Ball Z or Dragon Ball Super, but it takes the franchise back to its roots. By having it take place in this new world with a limited core cast, Toriyama introduces new lore and special items that will almost certainly be key factors in the coming episodes.

Dragon Ball Daima Episode 3 sees Goku (Masako Nozawa), Supreme Kai (Yumiko Kobayashi), and Glorio (Kōki Uchiyama) exploring the Third Demon World as they get ready to visit King Kadan, the supposed king who sent Glorio to get Goku. But after Goku gets into a fight and defeats a group of creatures, they end up stealing Glorio’s ship. What’s Goku and company’s next plan of action? Find out in our Dragon Ball Daima Episode 4 “Chatty” recap below!

Glorio Proves Himself a Worthy Fighter

Without a ship to travel through the Third Demon World, Goku, Glorio, and Supreme Kai are forced to walk until they can find a new means of transportation. They can’t fly because the heavy air over a long distance will exhaust them. When they reach the Sea of Darkness, a one-eyed monster flies out and shoots fire at them. With his agility, Glorio dodges the attacks and easily knocks the beast back down where it came from.

Not long after, Goku senses the Ki of another creature trying to ambush them and strikes first. Glorio is surprised to learn about Ki. One may wonder if this makes him suspicious or just a curious person. They see a small shop in the distance and decide to renourish. Glorio asks the tavern owner for any vehicle they could use, but they only have a Sky Seed. Realizing there are no other options, Glorio buys it from him.

Goku sees the shop selling Medi Bugs, a brand-new creation for the Dragon Ball franchise. These items are a mixture of Capsules, Senzu Beans, and even Potara earrings because different bugs can heal burns, reduce headaches, revive people, and fuse two people. Excited by the possibilities, Goku has Glorio buy them for him. The Sky Seed turns out to be a one-time-use long stem that’ll catapult them over a long distance. After a stressful, but successful landing, they’re only half a day’s walk from reaching King Kadan’s castle.

Remembering that Piccolo mentioned the Demon Realm Dragon Balls, Goku asks Glorio for details about them. Glorio says they’re the original Dragon Balls, and that the three of them are heavily guarded by the Tamagamis, as mentioned in Dragon Ball Daima Episode 1. Hearing that the guards are strong, Goku wants to fight them and use the Dragon Balls to make him and his friends older again before rescuing Dende (Erina Goto) from Demon King Gomah (Showtaro Morikubo).

Goku, Supreme Kai, and Glorio find another town to stop in, but Gomah’s military police, The Gendarmerie, are there to collect “offerings” from the townspeople. With Gomah as the new Demon King, he raised the fee to three gold coins. For every coin a person fails to provide, they will lose 3 years of their life. The townspeople have collars on their neck to stop them from fleeing, which will cost them 10 years of their life. Goku sees that The Gendarmerie physically sucks out a person’s life force and stores it in a large container.

Goku has had enough and prepares to stop them, but a caped crusader (Fairouz Ai) shows up and throws a gas bomb at the soldiers. It doesn’t end up working and she easily gets caught. Goku steps in and uses his Power Pole to take out The Gendarmerie. Trying to avoid capture, Goku, Glorio, and Supreme Kai escape the town. The caped woman follows them and asks who they are as she unmasks herself in the final moment of the episode.

‘Dragon Ball Daima’ Is Better Than Expected

Although Dragon Ball Daima Episode 4 could’ve fallen into the trap of being a diversion, like how Dragon Ball GT felt, Toriyama still injects meaningful story points that will capture the viewer’s attention. He set up interesting seeds that may grow into something exciting in future episodes — the Fusion Medi Bug being one of them. Could Goku fuse with Glorio or Supreme Kai? When Vegeta arrives, could they have a new fusion other than Gogeta and Vegito? It’s positively overwhelming to think about the possibilities.

Now that Goku, Glorio, and Supreme Kai have a set plan to find the Dragon Balls and then rescue Dende, the goal of the series is established. But this caped woman adds another mystery. Is she someone to be trusted? What does she want with Goku and his team? Dragon Ball Daima is exciting to keep up with week-to-week as each episode establishes new routes to go down.

Dragon Ball Daima is streaming on Crunchyroll and Netflix with Japanese audio and subtitles in English, Spanish, and Portuguese. New episodes are released weekly on Fridays.
