‘House of the Dragon’ Season 3 Review: Back and Better Than Ever

This season is…Dracarys!

The following review is spoiler-free and covers House of the Dragon Season 3 Episodes 1-4.

After what many considered a disappointing conclusion to the previous season, the first four episodes of House of the Dragon Season 3 are all gas and no brakes. Where the second season spends most of its time setting up what’s to come, the third installment reaps the benefits, featuring exciting dragon battles and terrific character exploration.

As Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy), Aemond (Ewan Mitchell), and even Aegon (Tom Glynn-Carney) all quest for control over the Iron Throne, the Targaryen dynasty is more fragile than ever. While the action and world-building in the first four episodes of Season 3 are incredibly epic, it’s the character moments and chemistry between the leads that make the series special. After two seasons of finding its footing, House of the Dragon is finally firing on all cylinders.

They have been incredible in each season, but Emma D’Arcy stands out as the star of the season in story, performance, and emotion. D’Arcy’s performance should put them on early Emmy watch, as they reach the depths of Rhaenyra’s trauma in a new and heartbreaking fashion. House of the Dragon Season 3 also benefits from increased screen time for Rhaenyra alongside her old friend Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke), as Cook and D’Arcy continue to share incredible chemistry and tension.

In addition to their chemistry with Olivia Cooke, D’Arcy also lights up the screen when paired with Matt Smith as the menacing Daemon Targaryen. Daemon’s goals may be aligned with Rhaenyra’s this season, but he’s still as egotistical and driven as ever. Although D’Arcy, Cooke, and Smith are the clear standouts of the season, the entire cast in Season 3 is bringing their A game.

It’s More Complicated Than Green vs. Black

Although previous seasons have featured a clear “Us vs. Them” mentality within the Targaryen household, the battle becomes far murkier in House of the Dragon Season 3. Alliances shift, new dragons enter the fold, and chaos reigns. The action throughout the first four episodes is some of the very best in the series, featuring both hand-to-hand combat and grand set pieces that let the dragons take center stage.

The political intrigue shifts more to a wartime scenario, but the series still features plenty of backstabbing and story twists. While House of the Dragon still doesn’t reach the heights of Game of Thrones in “Anything Can Happen”- level suspense, the political drama within the Targaryen dynasty remains among the most interesting storytelling on television.

‘House of the Dragon’ Season 3 is a Return to Form

It’s not as epic an adventure as peak Game of Thrones, and it’s not quite as charming as A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, but the first four episodes of House of the Dragon Season 3 are still among the very best of the series. The story has reached the apex of excitement from the novels, and the creative team seems to have really realized what the best parts of this series are, and honed in on them.

There is no shortage of dragons, swords, or even family members kissing each other in true HOTD fashion, but the high stakes and character performances make Season 3 special. Only time will tell if they stick the landing, but momentum is on their side going into the latter half of the season.
