Warning: Spoilers ahead for Only Murders in the Building Season 4, Episode 10, “My Best Friend’s Wedding.”

Pope (Jin Ha), murdered Sazz Pataki (Jane Lynch), the Only Murders in the Building Season 4 finale is all gas and no brakes. Sazz wrote an incredible script before she died, and Rex killed her before using her script to further his career.

The ‘Only Murders in the Building’ Season 4 Finale Lives up to the Hype

There are hints throughout the season that Rex is a terrible writer, and since the murder had to be committed by someone with incredible athletic abilities due to the timing, it all adds up that the former stuntman would be behind all the shootings in Only Murders in the Building Season 4. In addition to his parkour abilities, he grew up as a hunter with a father who wanted him to live as a killer instead of a writer. Although it was heavily speculated that Charles was the true target, Rex was after Sazz’s script all along, and his childhood traumas forged the skills that allowed him to execute his plans.

After already losing one of his best friends, Charles isn’t going to let Mabel meet the same fate as Sazz. He conquers his fear of heights and scales the ledge of The Arconia to break in through Mabel’s window and save the day. Although Oliver has proven to be selfish in most of his interactions throughout the series, his recent character growth is evident as he joins Charles in the quest to save Mabel, supporting him the entire way in Only Murders in the Building Season 4 Episode 10.

Luckily, Rex’s shortcomings as a writer — the same shortcomings that led him to steal Sazz’s script — allow Mabel to hold him off long enough for his friends to arrive as she offers to help with his rewrites. Oliver and Charles disarm Rex with ease, thanks to the help of a distraction at the front door from Mabel’s neighbors, Rudy (Kumail Nanjiani) and Vince (Richard Kind). Unfortunately, their success doesn’t last long as Rex recovers his gun and points it directly at the trio.

Just as it appears all is lost for Mabel, Charles, and Oliver, a gunshot pierces the window and travels directly into the body of Rex Bailey. His body collapses to the floor, and Sazz Pataki’s killer meets his end in the same fashion as his victim in Only Murders in the Building Season 4 Episode 10. His killer is none other than the murderer from Season 1, the ex of both Charles and Sazz, Jan Bellows (Amy Ryan). When she’s arrested, she reveals she has been hiding in Charles’ apartment since the beginning of the season, waiting for them to solve the crime so she can exact her revenge.

After the murder is solved, it’s time for Oliver’s wedding to Loretta (Meryl Streep). The celebration goes perfectly, and their relationship has never been stronger. While Loretta’s job will pull her to New Zealand, they’re confident they can resolve their potential issues without a hitch. Unfortunately, just when it seems like everyone is ready for their happy ending, all hell breaks loose.

As Oliver spends his evening consummating his marriage with Loretta, Charles and Mabel are approached by Sofia Caccimelio (Téa Leoni), who wants them to investigate her husband’s disappearance. They dismiss the request, but Sofia is adamant that the disappearance is directly tied to The Arconia. While their interest is piqued, they once again deny her. However, soon after their meeting, they locate the dead body of The Arconia’s beloved doorman, Lester (Teddy Coluca), setting up Only Murders in the Building for an exciting fifth season.

The Good

  • The comedy between the main trio, as well as guest stars Eugene Levy, Eva Longoria, and Zach Galifianakis is fantastic.
  • The ending perfectly sets up the next season with another murder that fits the story.
  • Character growth from throughout the season pays off in Mabel, Charles, and Oliver's actions.

The Bad

  • The way they defeated Rex/Marshall feels a bit too convenient, although well-foreshadowed.
