Details about Barbie were revealed at CinemaCon, giving us more insight into the movie event of the summer.

CinemaCon 2023 is underway in Las Vegas and with that, we are getting movie updates left and right! On Tuesday, during the Warner Bros. Discovery panel, Director Greta Gerwig (Little Women, Lady Bird), Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, and America Ferrara took the stage and revealed some updates and behind-the-scenes Barbie details.

Barbie is poised to be the movie of the summer and ever since it was announced, fans have been clamoring for details and updates. The first trailer was released earlier this month, which gave us a glimpse of the star-studded cast and vibrant visuals of the movie. Let’s dive in to the new Barbie details and behind-the-scenes insights shared by the cast and director at CinemaCon!

The Barbie cast share insight into their roles

During the panel, lead actress Margot Robbie expressed her feelings about getting the opportunity to portray the iconic character, stating “everyone knows Barbie, and she’s never been on the big screen before. It was an enormously exciting opportunity.”

Ryan Gosling, who plays Ken, described his whirlwind experience on preparing for the role and shared praise for Gerwig and Robbie:

“Up until this point, I only knew Ken from afar. I didn’t know Ken from within. I doubted my Ken-ergy. But Margot and Greta conjured this out of me.”

Gosling also gave us a glance at his character, noting that while there were many laughs on set, “Ken has no sense of humor. He’s utterly, deadly serious.” This is consistent with the glimpses of Gosling’s Ken that we see in the trailer—specifically, his serious and dry line delivery.

Gerwig shares details and insight into the bright and colorful visuals

Gerwig revealed some more Barbie details during the panel and shared that the “look” of the film was inspired by “technicolor musicals like The Wizard of Oz.” The most recent Barbie trailer features a vibrant color scheme with lots of bright pinks, blues, greens, and yellows. Some of the movie will also consist of a darker color scheme, as shown in the first teaser released in December 2022, which will contrast well with the bright visuals of the rest of the movie.

Additionally, according to Gerwig and the cast, the movie set itself was impressively beautiful. During the panel, Robbie discussed that walking onto the set of Barbie was “like a dopamine hit.” Gerwig elaborated that she was so impressed with the life-size houses on set that it brought her to tears. In fact, Robbie revealed that people from other movies filming at the same time on the Warner Bros. lot would come over to the Barbie set “just to see it.” Gosling added: “I can’t believe I’m saying this, I know what Dorothy felt.”

New footage shown at CinemaCon shows Barbie plot details

Along with the news, CinemaCon attendees got to see new footage from the film, highlighting some interesting details about the plot, including Kate McKinnon’s “weird” Barbie and a scared Barbie developing flat feet.
