Jon Bernthal Set to Reprise His Role as The Punisher in ‘Daredevil: Born Again’

Jon Bernthal is officially making his MCU debut in ‘Daredevil: Born Again.’ What does this mean for the show?

Daredevil fans, rejoice! A new report by The Hollywood Reporter states that Jon Bernthal is officially set to reprise his role as popular antihero vigilante, Frank Castle aka The Punisher, in the highly anticipated Disney+ series, Daredevil: Born Again.

Fans are understandably excited. After the news broke, Bernthal even posted a photo of himself as The Punisher to his Instagram account, and a video to his TikTok promoting his podcast, “Real Ones.”

Who should we expect to see in Daredevil: Born Again?

Jon Bernthal is the latest star from the former Netflix Marvel Universe confirmed to reprise their role in Daredevil: Born Again. Bernthal first appeared in Daredevil season two as Frank Castle/The Punisher, and quickly became a fan favorite. He went on to star in his own series, The Punisher, which ran for two seasons.

We have already seen the Marvel Cinematic Universe debut of some former Netflix Marvel stars—Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock/Daredevil in Spider-Man: No Way Home and She-Hulk, and Vincent D’Onofrio as Wilson Fisk/Kingpin in Hawkeye.

After rumors swirled of a potential Daredevil reboot, Kevin Feige himself put the rumors to rest when he announced at San Diego Comic Con that Cox and D’Onofrio will return in Daredevil: Born Again. Since that announcement, fans have speculated about which additional former Netflix Marvel stars would make their MCU debut.

The plot of Daredevil: Born Again remains a secret, however, Kevin Feige teased a grounded, episodic approach to the show with an 18-episode order. Along with Cox and D’Onofrio, newcomers Michael Gandolfini, Sandrine Holt, and Margarita Levieva have been cast in the Disney+ series, although their roles remain unknown.

Now, Jon Bernthal’s casting raises more questions on the potential storylines that will be present in Daredevil: Born Again, and how Frank Castle will be involved.

Jon Bernthal is The Punisher

One of the strongest aspects of comic book media are the actors that portray these characters. There are some actors that have become synonymous with their characters, so much so that fans cannot imagine anyone else in the role.

Arguably, Charlie Cox as Daredevil became as iconic as Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool and Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man. Fans agree that Jon Bernthal as The Punisher is no exception.

An exciting time for Daredevil fans

After Bernthal’s casting announcement, and now that production on Daredevil: Born Again has begun, more casting news is likely on its way. For now, the prospect of Frank Castle and Matt Murdock interacting again is exciting enough for Daredevil and Punisher fans alike.

Additionally, Bernthal’s Punisher in the MCU opens the door for exciting possibilities of additional team-ups—or confrontations. It’s possible he appears alongside Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, or even shows up in the upcoming Armor Wars film. Although nothing beyond Bernthal’s appearance in Daredevil: Born Again has been confirmed, it is fun to speculate about where else the character may appear.

Daredevil: Born Again is currently set to release on Disney+ in Spring 2024. Daredevil and The Punisher are available to stream now on Disney+.
