The following Invincible Season 3 spoiler-free review only covers Episodes 1-6.
Prime Video has become the home for comic book content high in shock value, with projects like Gen V, The Boys, and Invincible, which returns for its third season on February 6. Robert Kirkman and Simon Racioppa‘s adaptation of Kirkman’s iconic comic became an overnight sensation from the very first episode, with surprising twists and turns becoming the staple of the series.
Although the animation continues to be lackluster since the downgrade from the first season, Invincible is still one of the best series in the comic book genre. The beginning of the season is filled with exposition and feels a touch rushed, but when all the ducks are finally in a row and each character is in a position for the story to progress, the series returns to its typical explosive form.
Invincible Season 3 picks up with Mark Grayson (Steven Yeun) dealing with the trauma of accidentally killing Angstrom Levy (Sterling K. Brown) in Season 2. Although physically Mark is stronger than ever, his upcoming battles will force him to grow stronger mentally and emotionally as well. However, in typical Invincible fashion, the cast of immensely talented voice actors makes the series special.
‘Invincible’ Season 3 Is As Emotionally Charged As Ever
Despite undergoing more trauma than any other character throughout the first two seasons of Invincible, Debbie Grayson (Sandra Oh) continues to be the glue that holds everything together. Oh consistently delivers commanding voice-acting performances and remains the emotional backbone of the series. Her ability to bounce back and forth from taking charge of a scene to being a soft-spoken beacon of comfort perfectly emulates Debbie Grayson.
However, Oh’s performance as Debbie Grayson isn’t the only one that stands out in Invincible Season 3. With the Viltrumite and Thraxan DNA rapidly aging Mark’s little brother Oliver, Christian Convery steps into the role and performs admirably, portraying the Omni-Man’s (J.K. Simmons) youngest son. Despite being new to the series, Convery’s performance feels familiar, like he could indeed be Steven Yeun’s little brother. The first few episodes of the season introduce new characters and re-introduce familiar faces at a blistering and messy pace, but Debbie and Oliver keep the story focused on the emotional journey of Mark’s family.
Atom Eve Takes Center Stage in ‘Invincible’
Invincible is always at its best when heavily featuring Atom Eve (Gillian Jacobs), which remains the case in Season 3. Although the character took somewhat of a backseat last season, she is among the primary focuses in the latest installment. In a series filled with shocking twists and characters making rash decisions, Eve’s moral compass keeps the show grounded in reality, no matter how chaotic the storyline becomes. Eve has grown significantly as a character throughout the series’ first two seasons, and now she is ready for the spotlight in Invincible Season 3.
While characters like Mark, Debbie, Oliver, and Eve remain the primary focus, the new additions to the series also make a significant impact. Aaron Paul steals the show with his performance as Powerplex, while Becky Duvall (Kate Mara), Multi-Paul (Simu Liu), and Xolo Maridueña as Dropkick and Fightmaster are all awesome characters with strong voice acting performances to match. Although the new additions cause the story to feel convoluted early on in Invincible Season 3, they’re still individually intriguing characters that all eventually play prominent roles in the series.
‘Invincible’ Season 3 Rushes Toward an Epic Conclusion
The first six episodes of Invincible Season 3 certainly aren’t perfect, but the highs will keep viewers on the edge of their seats and are among some of the very best in the series. While the animation is choppy and leaves more to be desired, the unique art and character designs make up for it. It’s a rollercoaster ride where sometimes, admittedly, it feels like you might fall off the edge, but wow, it sure is a fun ride that keeps you coming back for more.
Although it takes a few episodes to really get going, when Invincible finds its footing, it’s one of the best shows on television. Season 3 is a much more intimate story than the previous installments, and although the stakes don’t feel quite as high, Robert Kirkman and Simon Racioppa’s unique and thrilling storytelling style is sure to keep viewers on the edge of their seats.
