Warning: Spoilers ahead for House of the Dragon Season 2, Episode 6.
The second season in the Targaryen-focused Game of Thrones spin-off show is 75% complete as only two episodes remain until the ultimate fire-breathing conclusion. House of the Dragon Season 2, Episode 6 is now streaming on Max and features a strong zag from where the previous episode led the audience to believe it was going.
Part of the reason Game of Thrones and now House of the Dragon are such successes is the unpredictability factor. There’s a constant feeling that no one is safe, and an underlying inherent desire to question every character’s motive, which is heavily present in the sixth installment. The latest entry opens up exciting and unforeseen potential dragon riders while setting up the final two episodes — make sure you caught all the details with our House of the Dragon Season 2, Episode 6 recap.
Aemond Dismisses Alicent in ‘House of the Dragon’ Season 2, Episode 6
House of the Dragon Season 2, Episode 6 opens with Jason Lannister (Jefferson Hall) ordering a Riverlord to send a raven to King’s Landing to tell the Crown they’ll march on Harrenhal when Aemond (Ewan Mitchell) joins them on Vhagar. In the small council meeting, Aemond is furious that Jason Lannister summoned him, and wants to ally with the Triarchy pirates. They agree to let the Lannister’s charge on Harrenhal and Aemond says he’ll join when he’s ready.
After everyone leaves, Aemond dismisses Alicent (Olivia Cooke) from her council seat. Back on Dragonstone, Lord Corlys (Steve Toussaint) accepts his position as Hand to the Queen. Rhaenyra then offers a dragon to Ser Steffon (Anthony Flanagan) and he graciously accepts. At Harrenhal, Daemon (Matt Smith) has visions of Viserys (Paddy Considine) naming a new heir and stripping Daemon of his birthright. Daemon then accuses Ser Simon (Simon Russell Beale) of messing with his head and asks him to stop watching him.
Alys (Gayle Rankin) stops Daemon on his way out of Harrenhal and reminds him he’s nothing more than a pawn on the board. She tells him that the crown is a burden, not a gift, and eerily advises him to wait three more days before doing anything. Back on Dragonstone, Seasmoke burns Ser Steffon alive after he fails to tame him. Shifting to Driftmark, Corlys visits Alyn (Abubakar Salim) and asks him to sail with him on his upcoming voyage as his first mate, and he reluctantly accepts.
The Prince Regent Aemond Visits His Brother
Lord Bartimos (Nicholas Jones) disrespects Rhaenyra in the hall so she smacks him and blames herself for her council members not fearing her. Mysaria (Sonoya Mizuno) tries to convince Rhaenyra to keep looking for more highborn dragon riders despite Ser Steffon’s death. Back in King’s Landing, the common folk are hungry and angry but Aemond doesn’t care. Meanwhile, he names Otto Hightower (Rhys Ifans) his Hand and asks Larys (Matthew Needham) to send for him.
Grand Maester Orwyle (Kurt Egyiawan) then tells the small council that Aegon (Tom Glynn-Carney) has regained consciousness and may yet live. Aemond visits his brother in his chambers and asks what he remembers, but Aegon says nothing. Over in the Vale, Rhaena (Phoebe Campbell) looks after Rhaenyra’s children and learns about a wild dragon that roams the lands. On Driftmark, it’s revealed Addam (Clinton Liberty) and Alyn are Lord Corlys’ sons.
House of the Dragon Episode 6 continues on Dragonstone, Rhaenyra tells Jace (Harry Collett) she’s tired of being protected and Jace says they need Daemon, but she’s sick of depending on him. Meanwhile, a lowly fisherman on the shores of King’s Landing finds a boat full of supplies with a black Targaryen flag; Rhaenyra is sending supplies to the hungry citizens. Alicent sits with Aegon and Grand Maester Orwyle tells her that although he may survive, his recovery will be long and painful, and he may never be fit to rule again.
Lord Corlys Is Keeping a Big Secret in ‘House of the Dragon’ Season 2, Episode 6
Alicent talks to her brother Gwayne (Freddie Fox) and says she’s been sending ravens to their father but he isn’t responding, and Gwayne says he hasn’t heard from him either. She asks about Daeron and Gwayne says he’s doing well and is as good with a flute as he is with a sword (he does alright with the ladies too, apparently). Alicent then visits her daughter Helaena (Phia Saban) to light a candle for all the people they’ve lost. The King’s Guard enter and try to escort them to safety but the common folk are throwing food at them and getting rowdy.
They barely escape the mob as a member of the King’s Guard gets murdered. Larys then visits Aegon and reminds him he’ll never be whole again warning him that his life is in danger; Aegon asks him for help. Daemon has another vision of Viserys mourning and Simon wakes him to announce that Lord Grover Tully is dead. Daemon sobs uncontrollably at Harrenhal while Addam runs from the dragon Seasmoke at Spicetown.
Mysaria and Rhaenyra then talk about Daemon and Jace, and Rhaenyra admits they don’t have enough resources to kill Vhagar, let alone win the war. Mysaria tries to soothe her, saying she will serve her as she believes she’s meant to be Queen. They then embrace with a hug that slowly turns into a passionate kiss. A guard quickly bursts in to tell Rhaenyra that Seasmoke has a rider — presumably Addam — and she rides out on Syrax to see who it is.
In the Fire & Blood novel by George R.R. Martin on which House of the Dragon is based, the lower born becoming dragonriders is known as The Red Sowing or Sowing of the Seeds, and Addam riding Seasmoke is only the beginning.
‘House of the Dragon’ Season 2, Episode 6 Slows Down the Pace but Cranks Up the Heat
Although the pacing is considerably slower than the other episodes this season, the sixth installment moves the plot forward arguably more than any other episode this season. Things didn’t work out for Ser Steffon, but it appears getting more dragon riders perhaps won’t be as hard as Rhaenyra and Team Black thought it would be. With the penultimate episode of House of the Dragon coming up next week, expect things to get even more chaotic as the second season draws nearer to a close.
