We don’t know much about the as-yet-untitled Rey Skywalker film other than that it will be directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy (Ms. Marvel, Saving Face) and will be set 15 years after the events of The Rise of Skywalker, during the “New Jedi Order” era. According to Ridley, the film will showcase Rey Skywalker as she starts her own Jedi Academy and teaches a new generation of Jedi the ways of the Force.

The future of Star Wars will aim to explore various different eras of the timeline. Also announced at Star Wars Celebration, James Mangold will direct a film about the distant past, set during the “Dawn of the Jedi” era. It is described as a “biblical epic” focusing on the origins of the Force. Additionally, Dave Filoni will helm a film set near The Mandalorian timeline, focusing on the New Republic and intertwining the events of The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett.

Some Star Wars fans are surprised that Ridley is returning to the Star Wars franchise. After receiving a lot of negative reception from some factions of the Star Wars fandom post-Rise of Skywalker, it was up in the air on whether Ridley would return to the franchise. However, to many fans’ delight, Ridley is back!

Regardless of the sentiment around the sequels, Rey is a pivotal character in the sequel trilogy and the Star Wars universe as a whole. A Rey Skywalker film centered on mentoring new Jedi and rebuilding the Jedi Order makes sense and naturally follows her character arc in the sequel trilogy.

Her return will bring about a fascinating and exciting new era of Star Wars. No release dates were announced for any of the upcoming Star Wars films.
