As we’ve closed the book on 2023 — a year of sweeping epics made by prestigious auteurs that also housed the dying embers of comic book movie universes — 2024 is primed to provide a stellar year at the cinema. Of course, massive tentpole IPs are helming the charge. And most have promise to actually be good. But there are also some hidden gems in the mix that might not be on your radar yet. So which movies should you look out for in 2024? Here are some to keep your eye on in the coming year.
‘Dune: Part Two’
March 1, 2024
Easily the most anticipated film of 2024, Dune: Part Two is promising to be the movie of the year — at least so far. Directly following the events that took place in Dune, Denis Villeneuve is back on the big screen bringing Arrakis to life.
This installment features a story that relies more heavily on Zendaya‘s character of Chani while also incorporating brand new faces — Florence Pugh, Austin Butler, Léa Seydoux, and Christopher Walken — that will make for a true blockbuster experience. Unlike the first part which suffered from the ill-fated day-and-date release structure of Max, this will be the theatrical event of the year. If you see one movie in the cinema this year, make it this one. Trust us.
‘Spaceman’
March 1, 2024
Adam Sandler is returning for a serious role, this time in Netflix’s Spaceman. Based on the 2017 novel Spaceman of Bohemia by Jaroslav Kalfař, the film follows Jakub (Sandler) as he travels to the edge of the galaxy and finds a creature who helps him solve his life problems. From director Johan Renck and featuring Carey Mulligan and Paul Dano, it is sure to be an intriguing film, to say the least.
‘Mickey 17’
March 29, 2024
Bong Joon Ho has become a household director name after Parasite famously won four Oscars back in 2019 and became the first film to ever win both Best International Feature Film and Best Picture on the same night. He’s back in 2024, this time with a killer cast of Robert Pattinson, Mark Ruffalo, Toni Collette, and Steven Yeun, diving into the world of science fiction.
Based on a novel by Edward Ashton, Mickey 17 follows a disposable employee (Pattinson) who is sent on a human mission to colonize the planet of Niflheim. Once the first iteration of him dies, the new body is regenerated with most of his memories intact.
‘Challengers’
April 26, 2024
Originally slated for a 2023 release and pushed back due to the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes, Luca Guadagnino returns with Challengers, a tennis-focused pseudo-erotic thriller starring Zendaya, Josh O’Connor, and Mike Faist. It follows three tennis players who knew each other as teenagers while they compete in a tennis tournament to be the world-famous grand slam winner. With this finally being released, here’s to a spicy April theater experience!
‘Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga’
May 24, 2024
Mad Max is coming back, baby! George Miller is revisiting the wasteland for the first time since 2015, introducing a new saga to the story in a prequel focused on the character of Furiosa, played by Anya Taylor-Joy. The trailer itself is giving “movies are so back” vibes to the fullest. Chris Hemsworth has a weird accent and both the practical effects and visual effects look to be on par with the revered 2015 Mad Max: Fury Road — a movie that took home 6 Oscars, so look out for Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga at the 2025 Academy Awards!
‘Ballerina’
June 7, 2024
John Wick: Chapter 4 was one of the best movies of 2023 plain and simple. That momentum will not be put to waste in 2024 with the release of the spin-off movie Ballerina, starring Ana de Armas and Keanu Reeves. Several other stalwart characters from the John Wick universe are slated to make an appearance in the film about a young female assassin who is seeking revenge against the people who killed her family. I’ve got high hopes that the John Wick formula will translate to this spin-off creating one of the best action films of 2024.
‘Deadpool 3’
July 26, 2024
While the fate of comic book movies may very well be on the downturn, Deadpool 3 is sure to battle that hand over fist. It’s probably the most anticipated Marvel Cinematic Universe movie since 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, acting as a similar vessel to bring past superheroes — Hugh Jackman‘s Wolverine — back to the big screen. There have already been set photos and plot points leaked so beware if you don’t want to be spoiled! The hype is real.
‘Joker: Folie à Deux’
October 4, 2024
Regardless of what you thought of the original Joker, its cultural impact and footprint are undeniable. In the follow-up to the Academy Award-winning first entry, Lady Gaga is joining as the infamous Harley Quinn in what is being billed as a tried and true musical. Not much else is known about the plot except for the fact that Todd Phillips is adamant it is inspired by The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, a delightful French romantic musical from the 1960s (which is absolutely worth a watch if you haven’t seen it). Whether the sequel will be fantastic or truly terrible is yet to be seen but one thing is certain — it will be the talk of the town when it releases.
‘Nosferatu’
December 25, 2024
Any movie that describes Willem Dafoe as a “crazy vampire hunter” can take my money. Nosferatu, a remake of the iconic 1922 film, is posed to be a gothic horror film about an obsession between a haunted young woman and the vampire that is infatuated with her. The cast features the likes of Emma Corrin (who is also going to be in Deadpool 3 this year), Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Nicholas Hoult, Bill Skarsgård, Lily-Rose Depp, and Ralph Ineson — the ultimate gothic crew. This will be Robert Eggers‘ first movie since his criminally underrated 2022 flick The Northman.
‘The Trashers’
Unknown Release Date
This is the movie that we know the least about on this list, but the small amount we do know is enough to solidify it as a 2024 flick you should be excited about. Young filmmaker Cooper Raiff, fresh off of the Sundance prize-winning Cha Cha Real Smooth and what was my personal favorite movie of 2020, Shithouse, is returning for his third outing. The cast comprises David Harbour, Olivia DeJonge, and Cooper Hoffman with a story that follows the rise and fall of Jimmy Galante, a garbage tycoon from Danbury, Connecticut, who was also a partner of the Genovese crime family — sign me up!
‘A Complete Unknown’
Unknown Release Date
Timothée Chalamet is slated to play a young Bob Dylan in a film directed by the esteemed James Mangold in 2024. You could say the rest of the film is a “complete unknown” (*finger guns*) in terms of what other details we know. Benedict Cumberbatch is playing Pete Seeger and the film will focus on Bob Dylan at the Newport Folk Festival in 1965. Musical biopics have been all the rage for quite some time and the genre has been quite a mixed bag, so we shall see if this promising premise puts on an enjoyable show.
