Secret Invasion Watch Order: What To Watch Before the Premiere

A viewers guide before watching ‘Secret Invasion’ on Disney+

One of Marvel Studios’ most anticipated projects is set to release on Disney+ on June 21. With the ever-expanding Marvel Cinematic Universe growing year after year, it becomes more challenging for some to keep up with it all. To simplify that, we put together a Secret Invasion watch order, so you are all updated—and refreshed—before plunging into this new thriller series.

Kicking off the Secret Invasion watch order list is Captain Marvel. Without a doubt, this movie is the most important project to watch prior to jumping into Secret Invasion. Starring Brie Larson as Carol Danvers, Captain Marvel introduced Skrulls to the MCU.

Captain Marvel sets up the relationship between the Skrulls, Kree, and S.H.I.E.L.D.—Fury assists Danvers in finding a new home with Talos for the shapeshifters. That aspect has been said to be a major plot point of the Disney+ series. If you haven’t seen this movie since it premiered, it may be a good idea to go back for a refresher!

The next time we see the Skrulls is in the MCU Spider-Man sequel, Spider-Man: Far From Home. For the majority of the film, we do not know that the Skrulls are present. However, it is revealed in the film’s post-credit scene that Talos has been taking Fury’s place for some period of time.

The reason this movie is on this Secret Invasion watch order list is that it further shows Fury has been in space working with the Skrulls—potentially with S.W.O.R.D. or the Alpha Flight Space Program. Clearly, Fury’s relationship with the Skrulls runs much deeper than just their encounter in the ’90s.

WandaVision (2021)

The Skrulls really like to make appearances in mid-credit and post-credit scenes. The release of WandaVision in 2021 brought many new fans to the MCU with its rabid success during the pandemic. An element many didn’t expect to make an appearance were the Skrulls, even in a credit scene.

During the aftermath of Westview, Monica Rambeau is greeted by an FBI agent who is a Skrull that mentions that they want her assistance—pointing up to the sky. Many assume she means Fury, who is in space. While this seems to be more of a plot point for The Marvels, releasing in November 2023, it continues to show that Skrulls have been living among the citizens in the universe completely unnoticed.

Secret Invasion watch order bonus items

Here are some extras to get you thinking. You may be wondering why Avengers: Infinity War is on this Secret Invasion watch order list. It goes back to—you guessed it—a post-credit scene. One of Fury’s most memorable lines, stated in Captain Marvel, is that he only goes by “Fury,” never “Nick” or “Nicholas.” During the post-credit scene, while Maria Hill is dusted after Thanos’ snap, she panics and says “Nick.” Suspicious? Possibly.

We can also look back further to Avengers: Age of Ultron. In Captain Marvel, Fury mentions that he does not like his sandwiches cut diagonally. However, in Age of Ultron, eagle-eyed MCU fans noticed that Fury is shown eating a sandwich that looks like it may have been cut diagonally. While this can be chalked up to a continuity error in Captain Marvel, some fans suggest that Fury has been off Earth longer than we think.

If Talos has been in Fury’s place since at least Spider-Man: Far From Home, who is to say he hasn’t been in space longer than that? We know that Fury has faked his death in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, but who else could help him accomplish his hiding and keep updated with the occurrences on Earth, other than Talos?

The completed Secret Invasion watch order list (by release date)

  • Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014)
  • Avengers: Infinity War (2018) — Post-credit scene
  • Captain Marvel (2019)
  • Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019) — Post-credit scene
  • WandaVision (2021)Mid-credit scene

With this list, you should be ready to watch Secret Invasion unfold. There are bound to be plenty more surprises and turns along the way, as this thriller is designed for the audience to trust no one.
