2019’s Shazam! quickly became one of DC‘s most beloved movies upon its release. Zachary Levi was on top of the world, looking like a mainstay in the DC universe. However, with a new regime at the helm, his future with DC Studios looks less certain. Despite this, Zachary Levi has at least one more shot at box office gold amid personal controversies and rumors of being recast. Shazam! Fury of the Gods has finally arrived in theaters.
Shazam! Fury of the Gods has a star-studded cast
It feels incredibly odd hearing Zachary Levi tell Helen Mirren about the Fast and the Furious franchise, as she herself is a member of the family. Despite this, the Daughters of Atlas stand out as stars of the film.
Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu provide a menacing upgrade over the first film’s antagonist. Additionally, Rachel Zegler stands out as the film’s most intriguing character. Zegler’s performance and chemistry with both the Daughters of Atlas and Freddy Freeman is the highlight of the Shazam! Fury of the Gods.
Although I feel like the Shazamily‘s connection is the emotional core of the first movie, they fall a little short in the sequel. Each of their performances are strong individually, however, the family dynamic is lacking until the third act. While this is by design for plot purposes, it creates an emotional void that needs to be filled.
Despite this, it’s always cool seeing Adam Brody fulfill Seth Cohen’s dream of being a superhero. While I would’ve liked more screen time from his super alter ego, Jack Dylan Glazer is incredible as Freddy Freeman in Shazam! Fury of the Gods. On the other end of the spectrum, although Asher Angel is awesome, the film would be better served from spending more time with Billy Batson, instead of so much Zachary Levi.
Meagan Good benefits from extended screen time with the most delightful performance of the movie. The individual performances are fantastic. However, the attempt to spend more time with each individual character leads to the family members feeling one-dimensional.
Classic superhero movie formula
While not perfect, Shazam! Fury of the Gods is a very enjoyable popcorn flick. It lacks some of the heart and emotion found in the first film. However, the amazing additional cast members more than make up for this.
Rachel Zegler, Helen Mirren, and Lucy Liu are a trio of beauty and power that carry the film. Although Shazam! Fury of the Gods isn’t groundbreaking cinema, it’s still a very enjoyable time filled with action and laughter.
