Oscar Winners The Daniels Set To Direct ‘Star Wars: Skeleton Crew’ Episode

The ‘Everything Everywhere All At Once’ directors, The Daniels, are leaving the multiverse for a galaxy far, far away..

Academy Award-winning directors Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert (a sentence that puts a smile on everyone’s face) are set to direct an episode of the upcoming Disney+ show Star Wars: Skeleton Crew. After the success of 2022’s Everything Everywhere All At Once, it is no surprise that they are now working with one of the biggest franchises.

Winning seven Oscars at the 95th Academy Awards, the Daniels have been riding the success of Everything Everywhere All At Once for the past year. Earning over $100 million at the box office, the A24 multiversal story has filled audiences and critics’ hearts with laughter, love, and heartbreak. Since the success of EEAAO, fans of the directors have wondered what the pair will tackle next.

What is Skeleton Crew?

Announced at Star Wars Celebration 2022, Skeleton Crew is created by Spider-Man: No Way Home director Jon Watts and collaborator Christopher Ford (writer of Spider-Man: Homecoming).

Starring Jude Law in a lead role, Skeleton Crew “tells the story of four kids who find themselves lost in the vastness of the galaxy trying to find their way home”. Whilst the rest of the cast has been kept tightly under wraps, Vanity Fair reported that Lucasfilm was looking to cast four actors between the ages of 11 and 12 in unknown parts.

The show is also confirmed to be set post-Return of the Jedi and around the time of The Mandalorian, which could offer fans the chance to see their favourite bounty hunter and sidekick appear in the show.

Be kind

Taking to Instagram after the news dropped, Kwan confirmed that they would be directing one episode for the series, whilst addressing the negative comments online that suggest they have joined the “corporate machine.”

“Lol, all the people @ing us about getting sucked up by the ‘corporate machine’ can chill. These headlines are always misleading.”

Kwan continued by explaining that Watts had approached them “before EEAAO even [came] out,” and that they filmed their episode at the end of last year. Kwan ended the statement by confirming their “next film will be an original Daniels project.”

Star Wars meets The Goonies

Talking to ComicBook, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy describes how “Jon Watts came to me, very much wanting to do a sort of Goonies in Star Wars.”

Watts is famously known for directing the MCU’s Spider-man trilogy, where he focused on youth. Set whilst Peter Parker is in high school, Watts encapsulates the life of a teenager who is not only trying to win over the girl and get his homework completed on time, but also fight crime and stop bad guys on the side.

Mix Watt’s direction and knowledge of dealing with a franchise, with the adventure and heart of 1985’s The Goonies (which stars Key Huy Quan of EEAAO), and it is easy to see how Skeleton Crew could become a big hit for Disney+.

An exciting prospect

Although the Star Wars community will have to wait a little longer for the release of Skeleton Crew, the news of the Daniels joining the galaxy will no doubt bring excitement and hype to the long awaited show.

The remainder of the directors are yet to be confirmed, however Star Wars Celebration London takes place at the beginning of April, where more news regarding the show is expected to release.
