The truth behind Loki’s pruning in episode one is revealed and hell breaks loose within the TVA as they are running out of time to save the Sacred Timeline. Marvel Studios continues to deliver one of their strongest narratives with Loki Season 2, further challenging everything about Loki’s life and the future of the multiverse. Let’s dive in and summarize the action in our Loki Season 2 Episode 4 recap.
Renslayer Goes Rogue in ‘Loki’ Season 2, Episode 4
Loki Episode 4 begins with a bang through the opening title card. Starting at the end of time, after being pruned by Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino), Renslayer is trapped alongside Miss Minutes and a lifeless He Who Remains. The long-awaited drop of the secret that “will change everything” is disclosed as she watches her past play out –– Renslayer and He Who Remains have met before, as they joined together to build the TVA.
Under Miss Minute’s jurisdiction, her memory of all encounters between the two was wiped under protocol 42. The truth alters Renslayer’s persona as anger runs through her mind as she realizes that she did all the work and received no credit or recognition for He Who Remains, as he sat on his throne. Miss Minutes then proposes a plan that the pair, does not need He Who Remains/Victor Timely to restore the TVA, and they should do it themselves.
Victor Timely Joins the TVA Crew in ‘Loki’ Season 2
Back at the TVA, Victor Timely wearily walks around the place his variant built. B-15 (Wunmi Mosaku) meets Victor for the first time and Mobius (Owen Wilson) and Loki (Tom Hiddleston) hastily attempt to convince him that they are the ‘good guys’ and simply need his help to save the TVA. B-15 and Judge Gamble (Liz Carr) share a heartfelt moment as the loyalties of the TVA workers have changed over the last several episodes.
Time is not on their side as they are trying to race the clock against the temporal loom. Back downstairs, Victor Timely and O.B. fanboy over each other and their brilliant minds. However, Sylvie is displeased and urges them to focus on work as opposed to their friendship.
O.B. and Victor use their brilliant minds and devise a plan on how to fix the backlog of branches, created when Sylvie killed He Who Remains, similar to Mobius’ journey out into the temporal loom in episode one. However, this time is riskier than ever as the temporal radiation has grown massively over the past three episodes.
Mobius’ love for key-lime pie continues in Loki Episode 4 as they leave the two to work on their creation, however, instead of being brushed over, Sylvie calls him out on his priorities being in the wrong place. Sylvie gives a long speech showing her anger at being dragged back to the TVA only for them to simply do nothing. This causes tension between the two and brings Mobius’ cowardice back into the limelight.
Loki and Sylvie’s Relationship Comes Under Heavy Strain in ‘Loki’ Season 2, Episode 4
Moving to a different area of the TVA, X-5 (Rafael Casal) and Dox (Kate Dickie) alongside the other TVA hunters are trapped in a room. They all converse about their next movies and how X-5 sold out their plan when he got caught by Mobius and Loki. After her conversation with Judge Gamble, B-15 attempts to get them to turn to the right side of the TVA workers. This is in hopes that they will keep to their loyalties of protecting the TVA but in a new and improved way.
As Sylvie ironically stumbles upon the pie room, she and Loki have a heartfelt yet uncomfortable conversation. Loki comes to Mobius’ defense on “how he is just trying to see in the dark” like the rest of them. Loki asked for her help she walked away; the only reason she is there is that she couldn’t kill Victor Timely. Sylvie argues that the TVA are just repeating themselves, and if they can save the timeline, things will just revert to how they were.
Renslayer Slaughters the Members of the TVA
Renslayer and Miss Minutes take an even more devious turn in Loki Episode 4 as they head back to the TVA and attempt to recruit the rogue TVA hunters. They hope these individuals will join them to help restore the TVA to how it was and then give them their lives back on the timeline, this doesn’t go to plan. Although this idea appeals to some, giving them hope for a normal life, they ultimately don’t join her, besides X-5, and they are all killed. This is painful for X-5 to watch, but Miss Minute’s psychotic side comes out as she gains excitement and seemingly satisfaction from this.
Elsewhere, Timely is amazed by the technological advancements made since the 1890s and most definitely has a soft spot for the hot cocoa machine. However, when B-15 goes to check on the imprisoned hunters and sees their goo lying on the ground, it leads to the realization that Miss Minutes has shut out all access to everyone in the TVA to their temp pads.
Timely gets his cup of hot cocoa, however, X-5 quickly appears and prunes the TVA worker who was protecting and guiding Timely. After being captured by X-5, Timely is taken to Renslayer and Miss Minutes who are both very angry and insist he tells them where his device is.
This causes a bump in the road for Loki and the gang as they run around frantically trying to find Timely and save the TVA. Loki Episode 4 leads into the moment seen in episode one, where it’s revealed Loki pruned himself. We also realize that it is just O.B. on the phone, not so ominous a reveal as many expected.
Loki and Sylvie’s Magic Returns in the Midst of a TVA Crisis
After Miss Minutes locks everyone out of their temp pads, the TVA is in chaos and ultimately the only way to stop it is to turn off the security systems. This shuts down Miss Minutes and allows Loki and Sylvie to use their magic and get Timely back from X-5, so they can save the sacred timeline. Loki and Sylvie devise a devious plan to enchant X-5, take over his body, and prune Renslayer.
After successfully getting Timely back, the race is on to get to the temporal loom in time to save the TVA. The stakes are higher than ever in these final moments of Loki Episode 4. With Timely all suited up, his mission is to go out, as Mobius does in episode one, and connect the temporal loom device to rectify the Sacred Timeline. However, as soon as steps out, he turns into spaghetti and is destroyed as the temporal radiation is too strong.
With Loki, Mobius, and O.B.’s last hope destroyed, the final moments of Loki Episode 4 end with one of the biggest cliffhangers in the MCU. The temporal loom, along with the TVA, begins to blow up as the episode fades to black.
‘Loki’ Episode 4 Sets Up a Pivotal Final Two Episodes
Loki Episode 4 makes audiences worry about Loki’s safety, everyone in the TVA, and the future of the MCU. A climatic, frustrating, and time-sensitive journey that has built up over the past four episodes all leading to an incredible, yet unknown ending.
