Spider-Man 2 PS5 Trailer Showcases Breathtaking Symbiote Suit, New Areas, and More

Both Spider-Men return in the exhilarating gameplay showcase for Spider-Man 2, coming Fall 2023 exclusively to PS5.

One wait ends, another begins. To top off a mostly underwhelming PlayStation showcase, Sony delivered big time and released the highly anticipated Spider-Man 2 PS5 trailer. This comes at a perfect time, considering it had been over a year and half since the teaser reveal at the PlayStation showcase in September 2021.

To say that this trailer comes through on every expectation is a gross understatement. This reveal is so incredible that it almost feels like an entirely new franchise. It’s so unique and a massive step up from anything we’ve seen in either of its predecessors. As far as gameplay reveals go, the Spider-Man 2 PS5 trailer has a strong case for being the best of all time.

Fans have been in suspense following the appearance of Kraven The Hunter and Venom’s appearance in the first trailer, speculating about potential character models. Now that all this information has been revealed to go along with over 10 minutes of fresh gameplay footage, it’s fair to say Spider-Man 2 is the earlyand—heavy —favorite for Game of the Year.

After a brief-but-menacing introduction for who appears to be the game’s feature villain, Kraven The Hunter, the trailer wastes no time in giving us what we really want. Venom’s tease in the initial reveal trailer was met with loads of theorizing as to who would pair with the symbiote, what the abilities would look like, and how it would affect our favorite characters. This introduction answers all of these questions swiftly.

When Kraven’s goons arrive at Dr. Curt Connor’s house in Queens, they are met with terrifying resistance from Peter Parker and his new venomized super suit. This reveal and showcase for all of Peter’s new abilities is instantly iconic, but it also means we’re expanding out of our Manhattan playground from the previous games. Spider-Man fans love swinging around New York, it’s one of the best parts of these games, but we’re due for a map expansion. Unsurprisingly, Insomniac Games delivers yet again.

Peter’s symbiote suit entry immediately goes into the Hall of Fame for character introductions. The way he bursts out of the basement, consumed with anger and frustration, is not the way we’re accustomed to seeing him behave. You can hear the hatred coming through each voice line—Peter Parker is no longer a friendly neighborhood Spider-Man, but a creature obsessed with power and vengeance. Top-notch work from voice actor Yuri Lowenthal.

Along with Peter’s anger comes some fascinating new powers. He dispatches Kraven’s henchmen with ease, unleashing new abilities that show off a significant power boost. After experiencing the enhanced gameplay in the 2020 sequel Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Peter needed a boost to bump him up a notch, and the symbiote suit does just that.

It’s unclear whether his impeccably designed new suit will be taken away halfway through the game or available throughout, but Peter is heading down a dark path as a result of his new parasitic relationship, one it seems only his faithful spider-partner Miles Morales can pull him out of.

“He’s not normally like that, right? No. He’s never like that.”

Miles Morales is the true hero of the Spider-Man 2 PS5 trailer

One of the biggest questions surrounding this game over the last year has been how Insomniac plans to handle the dual Spider-Man dynamic. Having two main characters headline such a massive and beloved franchise is no small task, but from what we see in the Spider-Man 2 PS5 trailer, it looks like they execute the concept to perfection.

Following the electric announcement that Miles Morales would receive his own game set within the Insomniac universe, we’ve watched him overcome adversity and grow into his own Spider-Man. Although Miles doesn’t have the same tenure of experience, he is now out of Peter’s shadow and no longer a mentee, but an equal. With the addition of Miles’ venom and camouflage powers, he is a more dynamic character to control than Peter, but he needs new powers to reach symbiote-level highs.

It’s a fine line to walk having two characters with similar but vastly different power sets, and differentiating them while not having one feel significantly stronger than the other. They’ve towed this line beautifully through the first two games, and we have no reason to believe they won’t do the same here. One of Kraven’s goons can be heard yelling “watch out for his new powers!” during Miles’ introduction, right before he blasts into action with his colorful and powerful new venom electricity.

In the previous game, Miles uses his venom powers to absorb energy from Nuform reactors and other sources of power, and in the process, his electricity would often shift from a yellow/orange tint to bright blue. Miles now appears to be more consistently operating with this bright blue colored venom electricity, which could be because he’s tapped into a much more powerful version of an ability he’s become comfortable with.

It appears that a small rift between Peter and Miles is beginning to form, just from the 10 minutes of footage in the gameplay reveal. We know Peter. This isn’t who he is, and the longer he hangs on to that suit, the more he’s going to lose himself. During the ending title card, black Venom goop can be seen wrapping up the spider logo and the “Together” in the motto reveal, “Be Great. Together.” and what’s there to clear it away? Miles’ new signature blue electricity. It will undoubtedly fall to him to bring Peter back from this dark place.

Spider-Man 2 PS5 trailer breakdown: New features and things we didn’t see

While this 10-minute gameplay reveal covers a lot for our two title characters, there are also some small details you can miss if you’re not paying close enough attention. As previously mentioned, it’s revealed in the opening seconds that Queens will be a playable area, which means we’ll be able to travel across the river and do some extra exploration while engaging in some all new water combat.

An official blog describes Queens as “one of the all-new playable and explorable boroughs” so it assumedly won’t be the only one, but it’s unclear as of now which other new areas will also be available.

Insomniac’s Spider-Man games are well known for their ability to build and develop characters. New abilities expand gameplay potential and make everything more fun. Miles and Peter can both be seen showing off their new web wings, gliding through New York and through some sort of rings that seemingly boost their velocity. This is but a taste of the many new gadgets we’re sure to discover in Insomniac’s Spider-Man 2.

They’re bringing out the heavy hitters for Kraven’s new hunting ground. Dr. Curt Connors’ Lizard is one of the central focuses of the trailer, and while Kraven views the hunt for him as no more than sport, Peter needs his blood to save his friend Harry. Between Black Cat, Prowler, the Spider-Men, and so many more, Kraven may have found a hunt that will prove worthy of his talents. The biggest question right now is, what side will utilize the symbiote for the final battle?

Make no mistake, people are going to talk about this trailer for a very long time. This is the new gold standard for gameplay reveals. A game of this magnitude doesn’t need much buildup and promotion due to the credibility they’ve built up, but it was time for an official gameplay trailer, and they delivered with a flair. If this trailer is any indication, Spider-Man 2 looks to have a strong case for the best superhero game ever, and one of the best video games of all time.

When is the Spider-Man 2 game release date?

Spider-Man 2 is currently slated to release in Fall 2023. There has been speculation over recent months that the lack of any official announcement was soon to be followed by a delay, but the gameplay trailer confirms they’re still on track. Expect the release to align closely with the holiday season while leaving plenty of time for purchase, an effective strategy to boost game and console sales.
