The Netflix original film slate for 2023 has been officially announced, and we’re going through the biggest ones! This list taps into a multitude of genres, including action, rom-com, comedy, sci-fi, fantasy, crime thriller, and more! The following titles have been announced in Netflix’s recent teaser, and there is something for all types of audiences to enjoy this year.

Netflix Films in January to February 2023

You People (January 27)

This comedy is Kenya Barris’ directorial feature film debut. It stars Jonah Hill, Eddie Murphy, Lauren London, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, David Duchovy, Nia Long and more. The film follows a new couple as they navigate their family’s different cultures, and the expectations thrust upon them.

This sounds like a flick that many modern couples can relate to. Comedy aside, there are plenty of real issues to draw from that can potentially touch the heart of viewers.

Your Place or Mine (February 10)

We’re 2 for 2 with directorial debuts! Aline Brosh McKenna was the writer for The Devil Wears Prada, 27 Dresses, and the recent Cruella film. Now, she has the role of directing, writing, and producing this rom-com starring Reese Witherspoon, Ashton Kutcher, Jesse Williams, Rachel Bloom, Tig Notaro, and Steve Zahn.

Witherspoon and Kutcher play best friends who live very different lives from one another. However, when they decide to change houses and personal lives for a week, they soon realize what they really want.

Luther: The Fallen Sun (March 10)

The award-winning television series Luther is getting a film continuation! Idris Elba is back as disgraced detective John Luther, who has to break out of prison to find a serial killer terrorizing London. Cynthia Erivo joins the cast as an associate of Luther’s, while Andy Serkis will be playing the role of…you guessed it, the villain!

Murder Mystery 2 (March 31)

While Murder Mystery received mixed reviews, a sequel is officially coming with Jennifer Aniston and Adam Sandler reprising their roles as Audrey and Nick Spitz, respectively. They’re struggling to get their private eye agency up and running until their friend, Maharajah (Adeel Akhtar), gets abducted at his own wedding.

The Mother (May 12)

Jennifer Lopez stars as an assassin that comes out of hiding to protect her estranged daughter in The Mother. The film also features Joseph Fiennes, Omari Hardwick and Gael García Bernal.

The story is done by Misha Green, who wrote, produced, developed, and was the showrunner for Lovecraft Country. The film is directed by Niki Caro, who also helmed Mulan (2020).

Extraction 2 (June 16)

Chris Hemsworth is back as Tyler Rake in this action-packed sequel directed by Sam Hargrave. Continuing his job as a black op mercenary, Rake’s new mission sees him rescuing the battered family of a Georgian gangster from a prison.

Golshifteh Farahani will be reprising her role as Nik Khan, with Adam Bessa, Olga Kurylenko, Daniel Bernhardt and Tinatin Dalakishvili joining the cast.

While the story of the first film and this sequel seem generic, what continues to separate this franchise are the action sequences. We’ve seen Chris Hemsworth push his body to the limit, and he continues to do that in these films. The spectacle alone is worth watching!

They Cloned Tyrone (July 21)

Juel Taylor will be making his directorial debut with this mystery-action thriller starring Teyonah Parris, John Boyega and Jamie Foxx. A series of eerie events brings this trio together to solve a government conspiracy.

Heart of Stone (August 11)

Gal Gadot plays intelligence operative Rachel Stone, the only person that stands between a powerful peacekeeping organization, and the loss of its most dangerous asset. The film is directed by Tom Harper, and also stars Jamie Dornan, Alia Bhatt, and Sophie Okonedo.

Lift (August 25)

This film follows a crew tasked with pulling off a heist on a plane mid-flight. Director F. Gary Gray is no stranger to heists involving planes, as he directed The Fate of the Furious. The all-star cast features Kevin Hart, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Yun Jee Kim, Vincent D’Onofrio, Úrsula Corberó, Billy Magnussen, Jacob Batalon, Jean Reno and Sam Worthington.

Damsel (October 13)

From playing Eleven in Stranger Things, to the titular character in the Enola Holmes films, Millie Bobby Brown has a new leading role at Netflix. She’ll be playing a damsel set to marry a prince, until she finds out she is being used as a sacrifice for a dragon.

The film is directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo and stars Angela Bassett, Robin Wright, Ray Winstone, and Nick Robinson.

Pain Hustlers (October 27)

This film follows a single mom (Emily Blunt) that falls into a dangerous scheme of selling prescription drugs after losing her job. David Yates (director of four Harry Potter and all the Fantastic Beasts films) is directing the ensemble cast of Chris Evans, Andy Garcia, Catherine O’Hara, Jay Duplass, and Brian d’Arcy James.

The Killer (November 10)

After almost a decade since his last thriller, David Fincher is back with The Killer, starring Michael Fassbender and Tilda Swinton. It’s based on a French graphic novel of the same name by Alexis Nolent. It follows an assassin (Fassbender) hunting down his employers as he experiences a psychological crisis.

A Family Affair (November 17)

This rom-com from Richard LaGravenese follows a young woman (Joey King) who witnesses her mother (Nicole Kidman) and movie-star boss (Zac Efron) in a romantic relationship. The film follows them as they face the complications of love, sex, and identity.

Leo (November 22)

Netflix showed off 13 of their self-proclaimed biggest films, and at number 14 is the only animated project from the teaser. Adam Sandler voices Leo, a 74-year-old lizard that has been stuck in the same Floridan classroom all his life. When Leo learns he only has one year left to live, he plans to escape.

This coming-of-age musical comedy also stars Cecily Strong, Jason Alexander, Rob Schneider, Heidi Gardner, and Nick Swardson. It’s directed by Robert Smigel, Robert Marianetti, and David Wachtenheim; they all worked on the Hotel Transylvania films with Sandler.

Leave the World Behind (December 8)

Sam Esmail, creator of the Mr. Robot series, will be directing this thriller based on the novel by Rumaan Alam. It stars Julia Roberts, Mahershala Ali, Ethan Hawke, Myha’la Herrold, and Kevin Bacon. The film is set in Long Island, where two strangers warn a family on vacation of an imminent crisis. Despite also dealing with personal issues, both families must learn how to survive.

Rebel Moon (December 22)

The final film shown in the teaser is Zack Snyder‘s Rebel Moon. It follows a young woman named Kora (Sofia Boutella) with a mysterious past. She’s seeking out warriors from other planets to help her peaceful colony fight against the armies of the tyrannical Regent Balisarius.

This epic action film has a stacked cast in Djimon Hounsou, Ed Skrein, Michiel Huisman, Bae Doona, Ray Fisher, Charlie Hunnam, Anthony Hopkins, Corey Stoll, Jena Malone, Fra Fee, and Cleopatra Coleman.

Packed Year for Netflix Films in 2023

While I only discussed 16 of Netflix’s films for 2023 in this rundown, based on their teaser, Netflix has almost 50 original films slated for this year! This is only an initial rundown, so we’re bound to hear about more films that Netflix plans to release this year.
